Dopey "Los Mets" Jerseys Tonight

It’s my least favorite stupid-Mets day of the year!

Mets players will wear “Los Mets” jerseys and the night’s festivities will feature Latin American music and dance with pre-game entertainment and in-game programming designed to celebrate Latino culture.

Now before you make assumptions about me calm down.

Here’s my problem.   “Los Mets” means “The Mets.”   That’s stupid.  Spanish for Mets is Mets.  Are they going to wear “The Mets” jerseys on U.K. Night?

If you’re going to do this you need a name like Brewers/Cerveceros.    Gigantes.   Yanquis (although that would be a major departure).

“Los Mets” is stupid and it looks stupid on a jersey.

You wanna have nights for various groups, awesome.  I doubt that “Los” gains one more fan.

UPDATE:

Some of the comments have suggested I don’t understand the mechanics of Spanish.   I admit I don’t.

However..

Here are Los Piratas de Campeche wearing their jerseys.  No “Los”

Here are Los Tigres en Quintana Roo.    No “Los.”

Check out the Mexican League site for more examples.

  1. But what else can you really called them. "Los Metropolitanos" ? not too much of a change from Metropolitans is it?

  2. In spanish, nouns take an article when they are the subject of the sentence. To use it without the definite article (los) would be applying english grammatical rules to spanish. Los Mets is correct.

  3. The deal with "Los Mets" is the same reason why the Miami Heat had "El Heat" on their latin themed day and why some other teams do the same. Apparently the Latin community colloquially refers to the Mets that way. It's viewed as a nice gesture to the large latin community and in the end its a baseball jersey on a themed night, it's supposed to be hokey pokey. Plenty of other things to rip the Mets about than to just pick on this thing.

  4. Fair point, but I call the team "the Mets."

I never say "Did you watch Mets last night?" or "I hope Mets win the World Series!"

So why not have a small "the" on there on Saturday?

I hope we don't see black Los Mets jerseys. That would really hurt.

  5. On Saturday they should put "The Wilpons" on their jerseys. Or maybe "Dodgers".

  6. I don't get it. You say you don't get the mechanics of Spanish, so how can you get exercised about a Spanish "grammatical error"?

  7. I think the Wilpons like this night because if the squint the jerseys might say Los Angeles.

  8. This is another reason why the Mets will always be 2nd class to the other NY team. I grew up watching the Yankees but started watching the Mets regularly when Willie Randolph was hired to manage. The it all started to change under Omar Minaya's GM reign. Everyone with the exception of David Wright, Francoa and a few others everyone is hispanic. Not that I mind but the team is in NY – not the Dominican. We don't need 'Los' Mets we just need the Mets and someone who can run the team who knows what they're doing, not just making the entire team all hispanic. Geez – sorry to vent and get off the subject of 'Los' Mets but when I start I can't stop.

  9. are u KIDDING me, is this a joke, i get that a lot of good ball players come from Hispanic decent but this is an absolute travesty, Hey Mr. Minaya i get it that u happen to be of Spanish decent as well but what is this. What about the die hard fans from yesteryear. I have to say that this jersey as a fan makes me hate the team even more now than i did when you traded away Xavier Nady. Any real Mets fan should be pissed about this jersey because the team that many peple grew up loving just became a joke. LOs fucking Mets, way to single-handedly ruin an organization, and for the record, there are still Light skinned players available that are quite better than our current roster. Lets get off the latino bandwagon and find some white workhorses that will play through anything

  10. The only thing dopey is this article. "I don't get Spanish… but let me tell you what I think about it!"

  11. Real Stupid Idea, I feel bad for the non-latino players that were kinda forced into wear a Los Mets Jersey tonight. I don't think the Mets will change their jersey for any other culture. As Mets fans we know the team is 85% Latino and that's no accident…just don't throw it in our face.
Just try something new….Like winning Los games!!!!

  12. If the Mets don't honor all other culture's by altering their jersey's then I will say they are bias to the Latino community. We are a melting pot and the "Los Mets" are supported by every culture.

  13. Does the fact that they're pinstriped "Los Mets" jerseys make it better or worse? LOL

  14. "I feel bad for the non-latino players that were kinda forced into wear a Los Mets Jersey tonight."….. Yeah, I feel bad for all the non-latino Miami Heat players who had to wear… wait a minute, there are no latino Miami Heat players! Yet nobody had a problem with wearing "Los Heat" jerseys.

Are you guys not getting that this is for the FANS??? and has nothing to do with the players? Have any of you heard of http://www.losmets.com? There is a monstrous and rapidly growing latin fan base, eventually it will eclipse the non-latin Mets fanbase. If you have a problem with hispanic people, then you probably have a problem with America then too.

As for whoever said Minaya wants to turn the Mets all hispanic? He also did get Church, Sheffield, Putz, Redding, Wagner, Pelfrey, Parnell, Stokes, Schneider, Murphy, Reed, Sullivan… should I go on? Please get over your racism if you're going to root for MY Mets.

  15. Late to the table random thoughts
    – of course it's all for commerce. That's why we have the ridiculous heat-seeking, loss-causin black unis.
    – why not do it for all the nights celebrating ethnicities? The caps with NY in Hebrew are popular… take it a step further. I'm not bothered by this.
    – I can't imagine – or maybe I dearly hope – that the non-Latino players were bothered, troubled or even faintly aware that they were wearing Los Mets unis.
    – All that said, I am very uncomfortable when the teams wear Negro league jerseys. It says to me "remember the racism!" rather than "honor the wrongly excluded!" As a white person, I didn't feel right wearing the BBB cap on that giveaway day. But I don't have a solution on how to honor those players in another way. And they should of course be honored.
