SI: Mets Likely To Give Backman A Minor League Job

So so so much going on today….thanks to Tom for sending over this story from SI which suggests Wally Backman may get a minor league job with the Mets.

The team now appears willing to give scrappy fan favorite Wally Backman a second chance to return to baseball in a minor-league job. Backman has technically not been given a new position yet, but he’s been told they’d like to hire him and have invited him for an interview that is expected to be a formality.

How about handing him AAA as they once did a manager-in-waiting named Davey Johnson.

Which reminds me…wanna feel old?   Remember 20 seasons ago when Bud Harrelson managed the team?

  1. If this is true, and comes to fruition, it will be a great move. Wally was a great manager who had some bad breaks away from the diamond. From what I understand, his troubles with the Peanuts were overblown as well. It would be an odd bit of history repeating itself however, if Wally wound up managing the Bisons. Back when Jerry Manuel was the White Sox manager the manager at AAA, Wally Backman, was criticized for rooting against the White Sox so he could get Jerry's job.
