"Stick It!"—Ruminations and Actions

“Stick It!”—Ruminations and Actions

McGraw? I’m not going to speak ill of the dead.

An actress friend of mine was working on a project with Tug’s son, Tim. They sat together during this year’s 1969 Celebration. Nice guy, from what I hear. As we know, a great deal of Tug’s family were present.

I always say to naive Mets fans that they’ll be the most hated humans on Planet Earth: a) They’ll be associated with NYC and the envy that goes with that; b) The Mets are not the Yankees or Cowboys, so nationwide front-running is not the order of the day; and c) even before FA became tres chic, the Mets’ fans and front office keep destroying their own history. In essence, we’ve had baseball post-traumatic stress disorder since the horrific Seaver trade. Even Cashen’s well-constructed “dynasty” imploded because character checks were not enforced and Gregg Jeffries was given carte blanche over 24 other teammates.

Our retired numbers?

Stengel: A genius as a Yankee manager, I imagine; a clown for the Mets that set the tone of second-rateness. Take it down!

Hodges: Well deserved, but tragically short. I still remember the night he died when I was 13. At age 45, I was given the honor of producing the definitive book about him. Give him more honors.

Seaver: The greatest. Period. But only 10.4 years in a Mets uniform, the last stint being an unneeded, tabloid-driven power struggle between him and Davey Johnson. Give him a statue.

Robinson: Mandatory, and rightfully so.

Shea (both Bill and the stadium: What an insult the new stadium is to the vision of affordable, non-elitist, anti-gimmick New York baseball. (And you could see all nine players from 95% of the seats!) Sadly, checkmate. Next new stadium, most of us will be dead.

And so many players who leave just give the Mets organization the middle finger.

I keep hoping we’re going to have some bona fide Mets career players. But the way the fans, the odious media (ironically, our own media, SNY and WFAN, are the worst and can go rot) and the front office have/will treat DWright and Jose Reyes, I expect their middle fingers will be pointed toward us in a few years, probably with WS rings.

We need a new culture. It ain’t gonna come from the Wilpons. It ain’t gonna come from Minaya.  Jay Horowitz is the worst PR man in baseball. It can only come from us. It’s OUR house. They’re OUR players. Protect them: They have to face the media and pressure of NYC every day. Let’s police ourselves from crushing the spirit of our players. Let’s police those who walk into our house trying to cause disruption.

And that’s why I’m proud that I had that (jerk) who was openly rooting against the Mets in the most open and obscene manner get fired from his pathetic ShakeShack job. As fans, we’re the least powerful in the exercise of real power, save for our wallets. So we have to start the process in a bottom-up manner. I have no delusions that this will turn the Mets back into a contending ball team, but at least we can walk into our ballpark knowing it’s ours.
