Five Questions For An Average Mets Fan (Fan #53)

If you’re new to Metspolice, we have been doing a series called “Five Questions For An Average Mets Fan.”  Today’s fan is Steven.   To give everyone voice I deliberately have not been mixing in my opinions/memories with the responses…I want fans to be heard.  I get to pop off enough.

1. When did you start following the Mets?

Sometime during the ’69 season, but I feel it was always in my blood.  My family lived in the shadow of Ebbits Field, so closely that my aunts’ best friend friend form HS wound up marrying Gil Hodges.  From ’69 on I’ve never wavered…

2. What is your favorite Mets memory?

Jumping on the field in ’73 after winning the NL.  It was a wild scene…

3. What is your worst Mets memory or experience?

2007 or 2008 pick one.  Such high expectations, such disatrous endings…

4. If you could change one off-field thing about the franchise what would it be?

I’ve always hated that stupid apple.  I believe it was worse though when it came out of that hat…that ‘magic is back stuff’ killed me too.

5. If you owned the team starting tomorrow, what is the first thing you would change?

Jackie Robinson is a hell of a story and part of our history, but the huge ’42’ in the rotunda is a bit much.  He deserves his place, but it needs to be toned down a bit and more Mets history needs to be added.  Some statues would be nice.  I was in Edmonton, Alberta at an Oilers hockey game years ago.  The large statue of ‘The Great One’, Wayne Gretzky was very impressive.
