Mets lower CF fence at Citi Field

I woke up this morning to the news that the Mets are lowering the CF fence from 16 feet to 8.

My initial reaction was “what happened to pitching and defense” but when I took a look at Citi to refresh my memory, the fence is only that high right in front of the fake Apple.

It’s an odd move that’s not that big of a deal. It makes the park less quirky that’s about it.

I hope they leave the high fence in left and build a team around pitching.

  1. Shannon,
Immediately to the left and right of the 16′ wall in front of the Apple the wall is 10′. It stays at that height until it intersects with the Left Field wall, and the bullpen. Will that be lowered to 8′ also?

  2. I’m guessing that this is just for aesthetics… maybe we’ll get one or two exciting plays where an outfielder tries to rob a home run now.

  3. I agree. Keep the left field wall high. Pitching, pitching, pitching! The next step is rounding/straightening out the fence in right field so it doesn’t look like a blindfolded kindergardener mapped out the outfield walls.

  4. Life long met fan however having a smaller park doesn’t mean you don’t try to get the best pitching. Just look across town and there is some team in the Bronx that wins with good pitching and a bunch of home runs all the time. Now if you enjoy a 390ft out that’s great but I’d love to see the middle of the order all have 30 dingers and if our team era is 3.75 compared to 3.25 so what as long as we win. In my humble opinion move the fences in and get better pitchers. To many low scoring games over the past 40 years and only two championships.
