Picture of New York Mets 1976 Pillbox Cap

Today continues to be awesome.   Pete spent a few bucks on ebay and sent this in…

These are from a little before my time, if I have my facts right the Mets wore these a few times in 1976.  I have never seen one in person and game footage seems rare.

I’m adding pillbox caps to the list of things I will bring back when I finally own the Mets.   Expect Pillbox Cap day, Lee Mazzilli poster night II and of course Mettle the Mule’s return.

  1. Wow, that is an ugly looking hat. And yet for some reason, I would like to see it introduced into the Cooperstown Collection so I could buy one. 🙂

    1. right! I don’t know hold you are Paul but the country really had bicentennial fever in 1976, we saw a lot of 13 star flags and everything was “colonial” – somehow the pillbox caps fit into that. Not a Mets-rip there, I think many teams did it and the Pirates had them for years.

  2. Willie Mays wore it at the All Star game that year. During the Bicentennial, a lot of National teams took the pill box plunge. The Cardinals even added stripes on their batting helmets at one point. It was designed to coincide with the 100th Annivesary of the National League. The Pirates..for reasons they only know decided to adopt them for a few more years. It was very cool and unique. I’d love to get my hands on that Met cap!
