Stop the Wave

Real Job Boss gave me some work to do

Shannon,

I was at the game last nite (yes, with my Shawn Green #20 jersey on), and needed to vent. Feel free to use my anger thoughts below in any fashion you want, or just to amuse yourself. Thanks as always for the blog, you do an awesome job with it!

I didn’t hear what Howie said about those ‘fans’ doing the wave, but I’m glad something was said. The wave has become an all-too frequent occurrence at Met games, and it has to stop. It’s a tie game in the 8th inning, Pelfrey’s got two outs already and two strikes on the batter, and the majority of the upper deck’s got their attention on these fools instead of urging Big Pelf thru it.

Not only is the wave outdated and childish, but more importantly, it looks asinine in an upper deck that’s only 1/3 of the way filled! My seats are in the top row of section 521, so I’ve got a pretty good view of the upper deck. Not only does the wave make everyone look foolish, but because of it, NOBODY was into the game! If you weren’t participating, odds are you were either cheering them on, or hopefully staring at them in disbelief. In a game that should have had fans cheering wildly on every pitch the last 3 or 4 innings, nobody was hanging on the edge of their seat when the Padres got a runner into scoring position, and nobody was standing and cheering with two outs and two strikes. It’s not far to the organization, it’s not fair to the fellow Mets fans, and it wasn’t fair to Mike Pelfrey. He pitched 9 terrific innings, wanted the 10th, and we’re more concerned with standing and putting our arms above our hands when the action’s going on? Please.

  1. I was there (Sec. 422) and I made this very comment to the guy who I went with. “It’s a tie game, in the eighth inning, and there’s a wave going on. Good lord, what has happened to this fan base?”

  2. Just for the record, they do the wave everywhere. nothing to do with the Mets fanbase.

They even were doing it at the new “giants” stadium before bon jovi.

  3. I was there too, and this is a particular pet peeve of mine as well.

It makes you wonder just what has to happen on the field to engage some fans with apparently short attention spans and/or no knowledge of the game itself.

That particular moment you described was crucial. I was absolutely glued to the game and trying to block out the idiots waving. (Is that a verb?)

My family and I each have Howie and Wayne in our ears (My husband even wears noise cancelling headphones.) and that helps somewhat in blocking idiotic fan behavior.

  4. Problem is it is a staple at Met games because Met fans invented it. It’s probably the only thing worse than the Curly Shuffle and that other jerkoff that does the ” clap clap clap clap your hands” song and dance, which caught fire at Cyclones games. Maybe it’s time to start a grass roots effort to rid the stadium of the wave, just liked you’re doing with the blue caps.

  5. As I understand it The Wave first started in Mexico, and for a long time in the US was a west coast thing. I remember A’s fans’ claiming they invented it. Either way, it is most definitely for the left coast. I mean, think about it, going to a game and not paying any attention…sounds like California if I ever heard it. But I’ve come to expect us doing stupid gimmicky crap (cough cough Sweet Caroline)that I hate. I was honestly most upset these past few years when I saw the wave at yankee games. Sickening.

  6. Yea. YMCA sucks too. Throw Lazy Mary in there as well. Why did that song ever become the 7th inning stretch song? And you want to know what is odd, and some of you may find this out this weekend. In Baltimore they do not sing take me out to the ball game in the seventh inning stretch. That’s unamerican.

    1. They don’t? No wonder the Orioles suck. (I’ll confirm this on Sunday.. If they play god bless america and not take me out to the ballgame I’m gonna have a fit)

  7. I was in Baltimore for a Sunday day game about may 17th or so. They didn’t sing take me out to the ball game or god bless America. Just country boy. What’s cool
is what they do during the national anthem there.
