Can 2010 be successful for the Mets without the playoffs?

I mentioned earlier that I really like this team. Let me ask you, can this season be successful without a playoff run?

What if the Mets give you a full summer?

What if Pelfrey takes a run at 20 wins?

What is Niese looks like he’s the next Pelfrey?

What if David Wright puts up traditional numbers?

What if Ike Davis convinces you he’ll be at first for 15 years?

What if the real Carlos Beltran returns, and bring the real Reyes with him?

Would that be enough?

I say no.

This goes back to the organizational mentality. The above is “meaningful games in September.”. The above is off-season spin to get you to buy 2011 tickets.

The mission should be simple and clear: win the World Series. That’s it. The only time in the history of baseball where losing was “ok” was in 2001 which followed 9/11 and had a team with enough rings to eat a “you got me” loss.

Stay focused Mets. Win it all. Start calling some GMs. The pitching isn’t as good as it has looked. A rookie, a knuckled and a 40 year old isn’t good enough.

  • if all those things happen there is no way the Mets don’t win this weak division.

Success is the World Series and not doing soemthing stupid. If they lose a competitive world series, it’s still a success. (unless it’s to the Yankees)

Just because the division is the tightest in all of MLB and in recent history doesn’t make it “weak.” You’ve got 3-4 legitimate contenders out of 5 teams. Not bad. Just bear in mind that these 5 teams will each play the other 4 a lot. What impact that will have on someone pulling away or keeping everyone bunched is anybody’s guess at this point.

With the prices they charge, the Mets need to be one of the top 4 teams in baseball every single year. Anything worse than that is a failure.

  • If I’m sad to see the 2010 Mets go in September (or October), the season was a success.
If I’m happy that the suffering is finally over, it’s a failure.

I’d like to see the Mets add a pitcher to make the World Series a realistic proposition, but I want them to be smart about it. No more Kazmir for Zambrano moves.

Need to get in playoffs. Have to change the attitude of the whole organization. Get in playoff and kick Cards out to revenge 2006. Win it all. I say beat Yanks in WS, but I rather see the Yanks not even make playoffs or get knocked out beforehand.

  • My new favorite Met: #13 Mike Nickeas

Again, the site is having major problems…hence the funkiness….what totally sucks was today was gonna be “work ahead” day.  Oh well.

While I try to recover ALL the posts (doh!!!!!!) I’ll continue typing over here in the orange box.

So why is Mike my favorite Met?  Because I love the number thirteen.

(Actually my favorite Met is future Hall of Famer Jon Niese.  I intended to post today about “Mets I like” - but not having a blog at all is sort of screwing with the plan for the day)

FLUSHING, N.Y., September 2, 2010 – The New York Mets today announced they selected the contract of catcher Mike Nickeas from Buffalo (AAA) of the International League.  To make room on the 40-man roster, the team transferred righthanded pitcher John Maine to the 60-Day Disabled List.  Nickeas will wear uniform #13 and will be available for tonight’s game in Atlanta.

Nickeas, 27, began the season at Binghamton (AA) of the Eastern League, where he hit .283 (75-265) with five home runs and 33 RBI in 82 games.  The 6-0, 210-pound Nickeas joined Buffalo in late August, playing in seven games and hitting .214 (6-28).

The native of Vancouver, Canada originally was drafted by the Texas Rangers in the fifth round of the 2004 First Year Player Draft before being traded to the Mets on August 30, 2006 for outfielder Victor Diaz.

  • The site at metspolice.com is experiencing technical problems.

Remember those other 7,000 posts from the last three years?   Media Goon is down in the basement retyping them.

Until he finishes,I will use the Tumblr as a workaround.

metspolice.tumblr.com or just stare right here and ignore that white space on the left.   Might be a while…
