Caller to WFAN about lack of Mets sell out on Sunday

I’m thinking about suggesting to Fred that he rename the Champions Club back to Ebbets Club since nobody can be bothered to show up on Sunday to honor Doc and Darryl, Davey and Cashen.  At least people care about the Brooklyn Dodgers.

People are starting to call WFAN about this one..and it sounds like Evan may be a Mets Police reader: Audio of call about Sunday

I think we’re twitter buds at least. (@metspolice)

Still waiting for the mainstream media and other blogs to help move the needle on this one.  Sell this game out folks or Dave Howard wins.

Been a busy day here on MP – some stuff has already gotten knocked off the main-page…here’s a quick recap: a Sidd Finch jersey, the upcoming promotional dates (with pics of the umbrella, t-shirt and cap), 45% of vendors had citations, and Dwight Gooden has been found.

  1. Would you show the same support for other convicted criminals and (former?)drug addicts?

Gotta be reasonable here at some point. Nothing against the two players, but is that a message we really wanna send to the kids? Be successful, fall off the boat because of your success and then get celebrated?

    1. Great point on that one. Why should we feel obligated to attend when Doc and Darryl ruined the chances of a dynasty with their drug use? Also, I believe the calling card of the 80’s Mets was their underachievement under the helm of Davey Johnson.

Therefore, the only person really deserving of our attendance on Sunday is Frank Cashen, who put the team together.

  2. Good thing the Sunday Ticket plan covers thi-….OH WAIT IT DOESN’T.

But seriously, I’m going to the Cardinals games on Wednesday and (taking off work to go) Thursday, and I would have gone to this game on Sunday if it was part of the plan, but the Mets in their infinite wisdom left it off the plan.

  3. Former addicts or not, these guys were my heroes growing up and I’ll be there. And, I have no kids, but if I did I’d certainly hope to teach them about forgiveness, redemption, and loyalty… so I’d have no problem telling them the good and bad about Doc and Straw.

As for the ticket sales, 30-40 bucks is still a lot of money for a lot of working people. 80-150 for a ticket is absurd. I go to games, but Met ticket prices are way off what many, many people in their backyard of Queens and NYC can realistically afford for an afternoon.

    1. I think there are well more than 40k people that can afford 30-40 bucks for a celebration (even the 15k seats that are that price) of a sport and team they love. Easily.

This is, unfortuntely, the reality of baseball. It’s a lot harder for some of the lower end families to afford, with the same regularity theymight have 30 years ago, but it’s not really much of a difference from other entertainment sources, particularly in NY.

  4. There are tons of cheaper things to do in NYC. Free beaches, free summer concerts every single day in a different park, free museums every day, the parks… NYC is a mecca of free stuff.

Baseball games in this town are overpriced. I pay it because I’m a single guy with no family to feed, but for a family of 3 or 4, a day out at a ball game is not a realistic family option for most working class folks in this city. That’s a huge segment of the population, and in my opinion, a big part of the reason attendance numbers are down.

    1. You could also wait for a cheap game, park for free somewhere, and bring your own lunch. Total cost for a family of 4, $44, or even $60 if you bump it up to a bronze game. if you park? $80. $80 for four or five hours (you’re going to go to batting practice right?) of baseball entertainment is very reasonable.

Sure, there are plenty of free entertainment options. You could also go to the park and watch a baseball game. Broadway show’s gonna run you at least $200, if you look for all the deals. Zoo prices are up there. Even a Matinée movie is going to cost you $30. Suggested admission to the Natural History Museum is $50 plus any add-on IMAX/Butterfly exhibits you want to see.

  5. All Jeff & Fred are doing are “Playing With Our Emotions”.
They have already showen that they don’t have a clue on how to run a team. Its just another way the found to try to make a buck without spending any.

  6. Ceetar, where isn’t attendance down these days? The Mets arent any different than the rest of the economy. I even believe the statistics were that McDonalds was recently up and higher end chains were down. If I had to bet, Minor League baseball is up while the majors are down too.

While there are other reasons for some people Im sure most families cant justify even $80 to sit in the upper deck, which at Citifield isn’t all that enjoyable for 8,000 of those 15,000 seats. Let’s face it, the cat is out of the bag on those seats this year and they should be priced similar to the $5 seats that the Yankees have.

Ask the Jets how sales are going. They did awesome last year AND they added some solid pickups. I got another call today….that would be abhout the 5th call, yet if you read all thet Jets big wigs, sales are supposedly going well. I have never ever gotten a call from the Jets until this year.

  7. Bottom line, it is too expensive to go to a baseball game. Fan or not, at some point the cost exceeds the benefit of going to the game. Who wants to pay in excess of $20 per ticket to sit in the bleachers and then another $20 to park the car when you can see the game for free on your 50″ TV at home without overpriced concessions.

Mets Hall of Fame inductions, big deal. None of these players are in the big Hall of Fame and they’re a distant memory to the new Mets fans, none of whom were born when they had their heyday. This generation of fans do not value the history of baseball period, especially at these prices of admission.
