Veteran’s Day 2009: Beltran visits Veterans Hospital on 23rd

To be fair to Carlos Beltran…this article puts him in a better light and he probably deserves more credit from emotional jerks like me.

From November 2009 which I will observe is the offseason.  I linked to Denis Hamill’s column at the time and if I recall properly Dennis usually appears in a more obscure part of the paper.

“Hey, man, Happy Veterans Day,” Beltran said, offering his hand. “Thanks for your service. How you doing today, Jay? What’s that you’re painting?”

Beltran gazed around this sobering room where the men who didn’t forget their country but are too often later forgotten – with some 130,000 veterans out there homeless across the fruited plain, and countless more physically and mentally wounded by the horrors of war – were thrilled to know that a baseball star had taken the time on a Veterans Day to put the word “hero” in perspective.
