Make our own Mets Old-Timers Day: Left Field

Happy New Year Mets Fans.   1/1/11 (I just like typing that) and the year the Mets win the World Series.   Anyone else wearing a Mets jersey this morning?  I am.  (Really.)

It’s a slow start here at Mets Police HQ…you know the deal….I’m too tired to even make the Unnamed Donuts Chain run (Frosted Flakes are subbing in)…..

I don’t want to distract everyone from the entertaining Worst 50 Mets of All Time discussion, so please continue to comment on that post.

Concurrently, we have been making our own Old-Timers Day.  The premise is you can invite three and only three folks at each position.   Today we look at left field.

I will invite Cleon Jones, Dave Kingman (is this cheating?  He played all over), and um….Benny Agbayani. How about you?  Fortunately, CF will be more interesting – and I will save that one for Monday.  Maybe RF tomorrow.

When I get it together I’ll compile who has been invited so far at the other positions.  But first…need to rehydrate my brain.

  1. Left field is definitely not easy, once you get past Cleon Jones. For all of the talk about Mets’ third basemen, they have not had a whole lot of quallity LFers. It is so bad, I am almost willing to put George Theodore in the top three just based on the fact that I will never forget watching him run into Don Hahn. So, just for kicks, I will say Jones, Thoedore, and any family member of the man with hamstrings of peanut brittle John Milner. Yes, I know he was basically a first baseman, but, You already have Hernandez, Olerud & Clendenon at first.

  2. How about George Foster, Kevin Mcreynolds and Vince Coleman. The best players we loved to boo!!

  3. Cleon forever – my fave all-time Met. All the rest are second best. But I’d throw in Bernard Gilkey and Ciff Floyd, two productive and popular Mets.
