FLUSHING, N.Y., May 17, 2011 – The New York Mets and EmblemHealth, which provides health insurance to 2.9 million people through its companies Group Health Incorporated (GHI) and HIP Health Plan of New York (HIP), today announced that Mets players including Mike Pelfrey and Daniel Murphy will visit four middle schools across New York City Tuesday, May 17 and Wednesday, May 18 in celebration of School Is Amazing.

Today, Pelfrey and Chris Capuano visited P.S. 184 in Brooklyn where they coached students in basketball and other activities designed to keep them healthy and active, while Daniel Murphy and Justin Turner went to P.S. 142 on Manhattan’s Lower East Side where they gave out tips to students playing in the school’s whiffleball program.

Tomorrow morning, Wednesday, May 18, Scott Hairston and Jason Pridie will provide instruction during a softball class at M.S. 101 in the Bronx. In the afternoon, Josh Thole will be the cheering squad for students as they race on a new track the children helped design at M.S. 216 in Fresh Meadows, Queens.

School Is Amazing celebrates academics, athletics, the arts, friendship and the opportunity to learn and develop intellectually and socially. EmblemHealth’s participation in the program promotes the connection between academic accomplishment and a healthy lifestyle including good nutrition and exercise. The School Is Amazing program was launched in 2006 by the Mets, and is sponsored by EmblemHealth. The program continues to reinforce the benefits of education and attendance, and allows students the opportunity to express what they most enjoy about school.

“EmblemHealth is the perfect partner to help us make education meaningful and fun for students,” said Dave Howard, Executive Vice President, Business Operations, New York Mets. “We hope the youngsters will come away with a positive outlook on the importance of learning by directly interacting with our players at school.”

“We’re proud to partner with the Mets to inspire kids to make healthy choices about nutrition, fitness and exercise by introducing them to positive role models,” says Frank Branchini, President and COO, of EmblemHealth. “This program complements our ongoing efforts to combat childhood obesity through prevention and education.”
