I need the Mets to win 10 in a row or lose 10 in a row

It looks like we’ll get meaningful games in June.  That’s a good thing.

What’s worrisome to me is the sort-of-in-it status of the team.

If the Mets are 10 games out it’s kind of easy to pack the moving truck and reload.  If they are 5-ish back, it’s a lot harder, especially when you have to factor in tickets/media/fans etc.

Will Sandy find himself in the same boat as Omar did – with a team that probably isn’t good enough, but sort of hanging around?

With the ongoing ugliness of the Madoff mess looming over the franchise, and Mets fans staying away from Citi Field in droves, this is a club in bad need of income and a good run of baseball. Having a premier gate attraction in his prime is a good place to start. Reyes happens to be as great a show as there is in baseball, every single night.Could you imagine the backlash if the Mets were to have an August fire sale and trade a 27-year-old, home-grown shortstop who can win a game with his bat and glove and legs?

Can you imagine if the 27 year old SS walks and they get nothing back but draft picks?

Scary times…a 10 game win streak or losing streak would clear up this picture.  Sure they’ve played well since Bay returned, but they are still 6 out and under .500

via New York Mets Jose Reyes playing inspired ball, like he wants to stay in Queens for the long term.

  1. Don’t forget the injuries, either. Suppose that 10-game losing streak happens, but without Wright & Ike ever being on the field at the same time? Then what?

Also, I hate the way the schedule has been. This May record is kinda deceptive, as I doubt any team in baseball has faced weaker competition since late April. Amid this Mets run, they’ve beat up the Diamondbacks, Dodgers, and Astros but only won 2 out of 6 vs. the Giants and Phillies. The only above-.500 team they’ve taken a series from is the Rockies.

Sadly, more and more I get the impression that anything in the neighborhood of .500 and less than 12 back at season’s end will be fine with most fans as long as their favorite players put up good numbers. Nobody threatened to walk away after blowing a 7 game lead with 17 left, but everybody’s going to burn their jerseys and never buy another ticket if Reyes or Wright go anywhere. Go figure. I’m guessing that’s some combination of a coping mechanism in response to going on 5 seasons without a playoff game, a result of the Mets’/MLB’s own promotion of “faces,” and a symptom of the Fantasy era.
