Dave Kingman sighting

Yes, that was Dave Kingman — the mighty and mercurial slugger — signing free autographs for nearly two hours as part of a Father’s Day promotion. (He was dressed in a casual Hawaiian shirt and khaki slacks, unlike the poor sweltering mascot.)

..

One by one, fans approached Kingman, 62, and waited for him to pen his signature. Many of the fans recounted their favorite home run. The 6-foot-6 slugger once hit a ball 500 feet against Jerry Koosman. There was also a blast of least 530 feet at Wrigley Field. And a shot (albeit not a home run) that hit a speaker on the roof of Seattle’s Kingdome.

  1. I met him once when I was 7 at an autograph signing. I waited 90 mins in line and when I got to him he wouldn’t sign the bb card…he wrote the initials “DK” on a 1/4 sheet of notebook paper. Real swell guy.

  2. He was my favorite Met when he came in 1975…I guess I took Seaver for granted. He was on pace for a monstrous 1976, then suffered a torn ligament in his hand diving for a ball.
