Should I buy a Mets ice cream cap?

From the be careful what you wish for department…the Ice Cream Caps are turning 15. We should have shut our mouths at the time and bought tons, lest the Mets bring on even worse ideas.

Who am I kidding? Messing with the blue caps was idiotic.

Max, who sent this to me (we may have covered this before) points out that you can’t see the NY on these, much like the dopey black caps

Just don’t add dropshadow.

The Mets got it right the first time.

The completist in me wants one, but not for $35 at Ecapcity

Help me David Einhorn, you’re my only hope.

  1. You know that the fitted caps sold in the gift shop run for $40 now, right?

This is a bargain, especially when you consider the “bragging rights” 🙂

  2. You’d just be paying $35 for a goofy fashion cap. The original alts had blue eyelets:

FWIW, the black caps were also shown with blue eyelets on the 1998 pocket schedules even though they didn’t end up that way. I always wondered about that. I remember being disappointed.

    1. Is Lance Johnson wearing a dugout jacket under his jersey??? Looks like it to me…

  3. Just came from the Sunday Matinee wearing mine. The eyelets (although an accurate point) are negligible. The Mets are also selling an 86 WS hat with a patch that didn’t exist.

Its pretty hard to find a true to detail Mets hat aside from the poly garbage they’re putting out now.

  4. This cap, to paraphrase John Stearns, let “the Monster out of the cage”. I can picture a room full of marketing stiffs at Shea staring at it in 1997 when somebody said, “Why don’t we make the crown Black instead of White?” Someone else chimed in, “Black hats & trips to Europe, that’s what the kids want!” and the Mets would never look the same.

  5. The only “ice cream caps” I have are the ones used for the helmet sundaes they sold at Citi Field early in 2009. And those are significant because these were unused helmet cups with the “NY” logo pasted over the Shea Stadium Final Season logo. I don’t mean pasted as in they just slapped a sticket over it – it’s permanently adhered, but you can easily see the Final Season logo beneath the NY. (Think “unpeeled Beatles Butcher Cover” and you get the idea.)

Never bought any of the helmet sundaes myself but I found a few of the helmet cups discarded after the games – I just washed the leftover ice cream out of them, rinsed them a few times, and voila – a free combo Final Season/Inaugural Season collectible! Yay!
