Mets place Niese on DL, recall Nickeas

FLUSHING, N.Y., August 24, 2011 – The New York Mets today announced the team placed lefthanded pitcher Jonathon Niese on the 15- Day Disabled List with an intercostal strain of the right side and recalled catcher Mike Nickeas from Buffalo (AAA) of the International League. Nickeas will wear uniform #13 and will be available for today’s game at Philadelphia.

 

Nickeas, 28, joins the Mets for the third time this season.  He made the club’s Opening Day roster and appeared in eight games before being optioned to Buffalo on April 29.  He was recalled on July 28 and was optioned back to the Bisons on August 5.

 

The 6-0, 213-pound native of Vancouver, British Columbia has hit .217 (5-23) with one double, one home run and three RBI in nine games this year with the Mets.

 

He has appeared in 14 major league games during his career, going 7-33 (.212) with one home run and three RBI.

 

Niese, 24, is 11-11 with a 4.40 ERA in 27 games, 26 starts this year. In 157.1 innings, he’s allowed 178 hits, 88 runs, 77 earned, with 44 walks and 138 strikeouts.
