Mets cap-gate

Hmmm…seems the manager thinks the players are afraid to talk. The players think the team would have been fined. Torre says nothing was ordered. Rubin says Wright says his hat wasn’t confiscated. Fascinating.

What a strange thing for the players to make up.

Kids, if you ever start a blog, pick the Mets. It’s never quiet for more than a week.

What’s the attention been since we walked in the ballpark today? It’s not on who we’re playing. It’s not on who’s pitching. We all want to know which kind of hat we’re going to wear tonight. And that takes away from the game. That takes away from their preparation.

Josh Thole via Daily News

“I believe that all the fines were going to be just crazy amounts,” Thole said. “It was coming down from the top as if the fine to the ballclub was going to be significant, and that was something (where) nobody wanted to overstep the bounds there

Joe Torre via Daily News

“I heard in several places that it was a ‘mandate’ we ‘ordered,'” Torre told SiriusXM Radio. “Nothing was ordered.”

“They’re all being asked questions. They’re afraid to make an answer. They’re afraid to say the wrong thing. We’ve got to start focusing on what the game is, because when it’s all said and done, in the end, that’s the only thing that matters.”

  1. I’ll share same comment I made over at FAFIF:

I continue to blame the Mets for this issue. They should have gone to MLB in advance & had New Era make Mets hats that had all the agencies/charities embroidered on it (I envision the left & right panels being filled with logos & initials).

Everyone wins: MLB keeps the uniform…well, uniform. New Era looks good, the Mets get to honor all the people they wish to honor.

The Yankees did the same thing after the Virginia Tech shootings. They played an exhibition game at Va Tech in which they wore (& New Era sold) special caps with the Va Tech logo on the side.

No matter the circumstances of 9/11, I don’t fault MLB for wanting to main a sense of order & upholding their rules. You can’t fault a company for having the foresight to avoid bending the rules for certain cirumstances, it gets messy.

But I truly believe this could have been avoided if the Mets were proactive.

  2. I hope the Mets players never say another word. No good can come from it. Willt hey piss off MLB? The Mets? the reporters? the public?

Just stick to baseball. I trust none of the mediums of this ifno, from Torre, to the Mets, to the beat writer who ‘started’ it with the tweets Sunday.

The most trustworthy guy? R.A. Dickey.
