Last stop on the 7 train

And so we’ve made it to the end.  A season I rather enjoyed, at least I enjoyed it through August when guys I knew were playing, but I rode it out the last 6 weeks.

As usual with the Mets, just as you think there is nothing to talk about they give you multiple topics.

In case you missed it…

The Mets extended Colactus through 2013.  I think Terry did a good job with what he had.  The only things that pop in to my mind were that he was slow to realize Murphy can hit, and he wasted like 3 weeks of Duda’s development by playing him at first base in a season that was lost.

Mike Francesa will be in the Mets radio booth today which is the worst idea I have heard since the Mercury Mets.  I can’t in any way figure out how someone thinks this is a good idea.  Does WFAN think there are Mets fans unaware of Mike’s work that they can convert into listeners?  Are there fans of Mike who normally wouldn’t listen to a Mets game but now will tune in just to hear Mike be annoying between Howie and Wayne’s attempts to call a significant moment in Mets history?  Dumb dumb dumb.  I hope Howie calls in sick.

Then there’s Jose Reyes.  Odds are he will win the batting title.  His final moment will be his finest.

I personally believe he’s gone.  I look at the payroll situation (4 players make the first $57 million next year) and then you need 21 more guys to get a $110m team.  Are you really going to offer Jose less than “Jason Bay Money?”   Well that’s 18 million.  That would take you to 75 million and you’d need 20 more players.  Ike, Murph, Duda and Tejada keep you cheap…but there’s still a long way to go.

…and speaking of Tejada, he hit .283 in 367 PA this year.  I feel they have taken quite a look at him….

…so all that makes me think today is Reyes’ last day as a Met.

In better news, it is expected to be the last day of the dropshadow which is a good thing.

2012 is gonna be OK.  There won’t be a World Series, and I don’t think you’ll have Reyes…but if you’ve been around a long time, we’ve had worse.

  1. I hope you’re wrong about Reyes. If you’re right, I’ll be taking an extended break from the Mets – and I’ve been here since 1969. It’ll be the second worst personnel decision in the 50 years of the franchise, and that’s saying something with this team. There are other things in life, and if they cast off a homegrown player of his caliber and evident stardom, well, there are better places to spend my dwindling jackpot than the Promenade Club. Maybe I’ll finish my novel. But I won’t actively follow the team next year. I’m a hard-core fan – a real base member. Brought my kids in. They’re hard-core fans. I just can’t support such abject stupidity in a franchise. I’ve see enough of Ruben Tejada – he’s fine. Trade him to San Diego. If Alderson does the “we tried” shrug and says the franchise has to move on – well, then I’m moving on. At least for a year or two.

    That said, go Jose!

  2. *sigh* I’ll be here next year, but damn they gotta keep Jose. Can we please get rid of Bay?
I will agree with Tom, this will be the second worst personnel decision ever, and we all know it’s coming.
Am I a jerk for telling my daughters that they can’t pull for the Mets? They don’t need the misery…

  3. TC needs to fall out of Love with the BUNT!!!!….Is that all he dreams about!

The Mets will make a small run at Reyes but they will now sign him. Then they will spin it back on Jose.

Tell the Truth? If you were Jose would you want to stay on this team?…Hell NO!….When you can pick your team!…Forget about it!
