How do game worn jerseys wind up on eBay?

I regularly see things like the below, and I’m not accusing anyone of anything, but assuming this is a real item, how do such things get to eBay?  Do baseball teams sell used stuff to collectors?

2011 Chris Young #55  New York Mets home alt white game used jersey size 54 with the 0063 wash code with +1″ sleeve and +2″ body.     I don’t know if the jersey was washed after the last wearing by Young.  The jersey has some marks as pictured on the front side of the jersey.  Hologram info is listed below.   Shipping is $8 not including insurance.  Paypal, personal check,  or a cashiers check is accepted as a payment.  (checks are held until it clears.)

Hologram number FJ491040 was located in the MLB Authentication Database under GAME-USED JERSEY.

I know they sell game worn stuff at the park, so I guess people could buy them there and resell them.

Anyone know?

  1. The New York Mets sell their Game Used Memorabilia to collectors. They do so over email, phone, MLB Auctions, and at the Citi Field kiosk. They sometimes sell the cheaper stuff in bulk to various ebay resellers.

  2. I’m not sure but my best guess is that Charlie Samuels sells them for cigarettes in prison and once on parole, the purchaser is free to put them up on Ebay.
