The $1150 1976 Mets Banner Day Banner

Hey Dave check this out..

This was on eBay last night and it’s going for…wait for this Dave…$1149.99 (I guess the seller thought $1150 would be excessive.)

Game used condition. Truly a one of a kind. This banner dates to 1976 and as was the tradititon until 2007, banners were proudly marched around the stadium on the annual ‘banner day’. Although we do not know if this banner won, it surely should have if it did not. Absolutely incredible work and craftsmanship. The banner is cut into the shape of a baseball, and has been handpainted with a baseball for every player and coach on the team. The right side of the banner shows a very detailed portrait of slugger Dave “King Kong” Kingman taking one out of the park. Truly a one of a kind Mets collectible, which should hang with pride in any man cave! There is light wear and a few stains throughout. Please note small metal weights were previously stapled to the bottom edges of the banner. The banner is also shaped like a baseball bat.

So here’s what I’m thinkin’…

You let me have my stupid Banner Day in the name of the 50th anniversary.

Then, we go around and collect all the discarded banners, and we sell them as “Authentic Banner Day Banners” on eBay together.  Or maybe sell them in the kiosk to the right of the escalators and cut in Jeff.

Whaddaya think?  I bet we could sell tons of banners for a grand each….who wouldn’t buy someone else’s banner for over a thousand dollars.  Surely the market for old banners can withstand 4 digit pricing…how else can this banner be explained?

  1. Don’t forget the $18 shipping charge. 🙂

It’s neat to see a surviving banner from 35 years ago, and I could even imagine it as a basement display piece… but that price?

Actually, wait a minute – the Mets should pick it up for their museum so they can show us how things were in the olden days. 🙂

  2. I was a big Kingman fan…but in retrospect, some Met fans really took Seaver for granted. You make a banner of a guy who would be a lifetime .236 hitter instead of a first ballot Hall of Famer?
