David Wright isn’t going anywhere

From 2009.

Even though Wright’s contract runs for three more years and the club holds an option for 2013, he said he would be willing to work on a new deal at any point in the future that would make him a Met for life.

“I would love that if they want me, but you never know what the organization is thinking. I’d be willing any time they would want to start talks,” Wright told The Post last night at Busch Stadium before the 80th All-Star Game. “You never know what plans they have, especially being a big-market team, they can sit back. It’s not like they need to get guys on discounts like a lot of the small-market teams.”

I see the trendy thing on the internet now is to run David out of town.  He apparently will be traded in July, or is it next July (that team option sure is pesky).

You do realize that Mets Baseball is a business.  Part of that business is selling tickets and merchandise.  You need a face of your brand.  It’s not Ike Davis and it’s not R.A. Dickey.

The face of the Mets is David Wright.

On-field, off-field.  At uniform unveilings, at Christmas parties, at 4:30 when bigwigs stand behind home plate at batting practice, at 4:30 when children stand behind home plate at batting practice and at the children’s hospital…it’s David Wright.

He’s not going anywhere…but that won’t stop the newspaper columnists from filling some space for the next two summers.

Fred, do yourself a favor and just lock him up.  He wants to be here, you want him to be here.  Why put up with this crap for two summers.  They have insurance policies on contracts right?  Take one out just in case, but just lock the man up.

  1. “Fred, do yourself a favor and just lock him up.” This is exactly the opposite of what the Mets want to do. They are buying time to rid themselves of the long term contracts.

David Wright will be gone as soon as a good offer comes around. We can finish in last place with or without him!

You actually think this team cares about the fans. They are looking at it from a business stand point.

I know of two friends who have bailed out as Met Fans. Our Sports writer in our local newspaper (Florida Today) is (was) a Mets fan, he wrote a front page sports story of why he is leaving the Mets and becoming a Rays fan!

Heard that Spring Training tickets are not selling well at all! Thats what you get for RAISING PRICES!. I can’t wait to hear what other Met fans have to say at the Holiday Sale at the stadium in PSL this Sat!….Disgruntled?

    1. Business is exactly why they will keep Wright.

As for a Florida based sports writer switching teams. Well, this isn’t the NFL. I’m sure if I lived in San Diego I’d hit my share of Padres games and only worry about it the 6 times the Mets played them.

  2. I agree completely with Shannon in this article.  Why not keep the one of the standup guys in MLB, a guy that CAN and WILL produce and someone that actually WANTS to stay with this team?  Wright is the Captain of this sinking ship, and like a real Captain, he’s standing tall and holding his place, not running to the lifeboats like many of the so called “fans”.  People continue not to “get” David Wright because he is loyal, has honor and respect and these are foreign concepts in the mercenary mentality of the modern athlete.  Why should we expect anything else, however?  Look at all the “fans” that are out buying Miami Marlin, New York Yankee and Philadelphia Phillie hats to replace their blue and orange.

As much as I like and respect RA Dickey, he doesn’t have many years left (I know he’s a knuckleballer, but he is 37 years old). Who knows what Ike will do even if he is healthy?  In the worst season of his career, DW still hit almost .260 and over a 162 game pace would have hit 23 home runs and drive in 95 runs (Yes, it’s true.  Do the math) and in today’s non-HGH and non-Steroid era, that’s pretty darn good.

It takes two seconds to find a clip where DW talks about how he wants to be a Met for life.  No talk of money, years or anything else.  Find me ONE other ball player in the game today that will sound similar.  As fans that are getting disgruntled we pine for the days of Musial, Feller and the kind of role models that put team and city before their pocketbooks.  We have a modern day version of this, and he wears number 5 for the New York Mets.

  3. if your abandoning your team at all you obviously werent a true fan to begin with. i have seen my share of bad years with all my teams, the ny mets, the buffalo bills, the miami heat, and the new jersey devils and tampa bay lightning. i stick with my teams because when they win its that much sweeter. give me the 2 met world series titles any day over the yankees 27. even though i wasnt alive in 69 and too young to remeber 86 those are memorable teams ine veryones memories including fans of baseball who couldnt stand the mets. but they cant name a world series victory  of the yankees thats as memorable.

  4. I want to hear David Wright say that he wants to be a Met for life when he gets to spring training & he’s had a chance to digest the team’s current fiscal reality. If he cares about having a World Series ring when he retires, he’s got to be having some second thoughts about re-signing when his contract is up.

    1. The reason Wright will probably stay is the same reason he is not a great leader…no killer instinct. He’s a nice guy who doesn’t like to make waves.
