Mets Attendance Down in 2012 | The Mets Report

I haven’t verified these numbers but have no reason not to believe the nice folks at Mets Today.

According to ESPN stats, attendance at Citi Field is down about 10% in 2012 through the first 19 home games. The Mets are averaging 27,683 paid per game. They finished 2011 averaging 30,108 in a park with a capacity of 42,000.

  1. try this one:

compares it to last year at this point in the year.  Puts it down about 4% or so.  if you recall it was about even last week so it’s possible the rainy weather during the last homestand hurt it.

We haven’t hit the summer/peak months yet either, but with the ASG being official (and this team being better than last year) I’d be surprised if they ended lower than last year.

  2. 10% seems about right when you consider the loss of an all-time great and what that says to fans, and the limited expectations for the year. Now, if Wright pursues .400 and the Mets stay above .500, I think they narrow it to single digits over the summer.

  3. It always is harder to draw earlier in the year with the uncertain weather and kids in school.  Good shot at this team outdrawing last year given their level of play and likability.

  4. That really to bad because this team is really playing way over its head right now and they are hanging in there. Far beyond anyone’s expectations this year.

I am not sure that they can keep his pace up for the whole year so I believe the attendance will continue to slide if the team starts to. I don’t believe fans will come out to see the Mets if they fall out of contention.

I think you. are going to see a lot of freebies, 2 for 1’s and BOGO’s by the all star break.

  5. Shannon, would love to hear your thoughts on this as you refer to the fans who are boycotting the Mets a lot. Do you think they are the missing 10%?

    1. I don’t think it’s “boycotting” I think it’s the result of a very negative offseason and no new shiny player to drive advance ticket sales last winter.
Personally I already have my deposit in on 13.

I don’t believe there are more than a handful of people abstaining from the team. More just the effects of several down seasons.
