Shannon posted the other day how he has checked out of the Mets season this year. It can be understandable. I think he might be more burnt out from defending the positivity this year then just checking out. He and I both took the approach against the negativity a lot of people had before the season began that the Mets would suck the whole season and lose a 100 or more games. We both rallied against this and said if the team is playing fun baseball and is better then last year’s team then it should be a fun to watch season. You have to admit that first half was fun. I enjoyed it. The team soared higher then anyone thought they had a chance of doing. Then injuries hit, players got cold all at the same time, the offense was non existent, the bullpen failed and the second half has just sucked since then. When I am working it is sometimes hard for me to catch every pitch and at bat so even now I am not glued to the tv or radio.
Have I checked out? No. I still am following the team on the internet, from the Mets website or my fellow fans on twitter. I just looked at my tickets I have left for the rest of the season. I have 4 games left, 3 of them this weekend. I will be at the games definitely Saturday and Sunday and more then likely if I don’t have to work Friday also. Like I said, I can understand if the Mets aren’t a priority right now with school starting,football starting, fall right around the corner and the Mets season not ending as well as it began.
I know where I’ll be this weekend. I will be at the ball park cheering on the Mets if they are winning or holding my head because of the headache they have caused me if they lose.
Saturday I will be at the blogger tailgate, if you guys are around stop buy. It will be in the MTA parking lot across from Citi Field and it starts around 11 am.

Shannon here: I mentioned in yesterday’s post that I realized I had checked out. It’s not a declaration of anger as in “the Mets suck I’m out of here until they win 100 games” – it’s more a reflection of my life, and a realization that I let the weekend go by and only popped in on a few innings. Last night I wrapped up work at MI6, a 5 mile run in the rain, prep for a presentation on Project B, and did the MP Newsletter before eating dinner at 10pm. I put on the Mets and it was 4-0 and 10:15 or so, so I went to bed. Tonight I am home late.
It’s not a justification, just a realization. Sure if they were one game out of the Wild Card I would make a little more effort. That I won’t deny.
Interesting topic. Again, “Mets baseball” is a producty designed to get you to buy merch, food, tickets and watch television commercials. Right now the product is losing the battle for a very limited resource called time.
Have I checked out? No, or I wouldn’t be spending any time looking at a blog related to the Mets. Am I as interested as I was in May and June? No. I don’t even think I’m as interested as I was during spring training, to be honest. But I did watch a few innings last night and I still check the score, even if I don’t watch the game.
I’m not checked out, but that may be largely due to the mic skills of Josh, Howie, Gary, Keith and Ron.
Once the team checks out, even the most hardcore fans generally checkout. Devoting 2-3 hours a night from April through October is not exactly easy, even in the grandest of seasons.
I hate to be one of the “I told you so” bunch, but back when the season was in its February infancy and fans were excited and others discouraged, the one thing that rang true for me was simple. What will this front office do given the chance, if the team does over achieve expectations. My heart said they would find a way to make some smart if not spectacular moves. By the way, I am no idiot, what the Dodgers did was fools gold, in spades. My mind told me they will do nothing and the team would be left to its own demise or perhaps further success. Sadly the mind won, and the downside was demise.
I get were a lot of the sentiment of ya gotta believe rose from when this season was beginning. I mean really, who does not want to see their team succeed? But at the end of the day the naysayers, while often brazen and slightly annoying (me often included, at least this year), frustration has risen to a fever pitch over a series of just total breach of trust between the ownership and management of this team and the fan base.
There was a lot of get over it attitude among certain fans regarding Jose Reyes, and while I would love to be wrong, I think that the same group will be needing to to explain the exit of David Wright, sooner rather than later.
My guess is this whole unappealing affair ends with the Sterling group finally realizing that pushing up the rock and having it roll over them is not working out and the team gets sold in 2014 after they have their All-Star “prom”. Again, would love to be wrong. But I’d also like to see Matt Harvey pitch more than one more time this year 😉
I’ll check out when Wright checks out, meaning not until the last out of the last game.
