Why should we give you the A&E Home Video New York Mets 50th Anniversary Collector’s Set?

We have one copy of the A&E Home Video New York Mets 50th Anniversary Collector’s Set to give to one of you.

This will be a simple contest. You will tell The Selection Committee why you deserve it by pleading your case in the comments section of this post. The Selection Committee (made up of the public personas commonly known as Shannon Shark/@metspolice and Media Goon/@mediagoon) will make a subjective decision on who made the best case. There is no substitute prize. There is no cash equivalent. You tell us why you deserve it, we’ll huddle, and someone will win.

Judging will be based upon our subjective whims such as “most original”, “most retweeted”, “most shared on Facebook”, “most liked on Facebook”, “damn that was a really good story” or even possibly “I dunno, that guy.”

Contest ends Friday September 21, 2012 at noon eastern time.

  1. I wore out my father’s VHS copies of “An Amazin Era – Mets’ 25th Anniversary” & “1986 – A Year To Remember.” I took my little brother to a game when he was 6 just so he could get me the “Rey O” Ordonez video for kids 12 & under. I still watch the Shea Goodbye ceremony and tear up. I think 16, 17, and 18 should be retired. Butch Huskey hit a homer which I tried to catch and it bounced off my hand. It bothers me that the Mets never do an old timers day, or even an on-field celebration of past players that weren’t the greatest, but were popular (Agbayani, Turk, Rick Reed, etc.). I am glad Fran Healy no longer announces games. I think John Stearns and Craig Swan are both long overdue for the Mets Hall Of Fame. I hope Wally gets to manage. I never give up on the team.
So, yeah, give me the 50th anniversary collector’s set!

      1. I loved that tape. I watched it so many times that the songs are still stuck in my head. From Bowie’s “Changes” for the trades to the ending with Neil Diamond’s “Beautiful Noise.”

  2. the copy I bought for $12 from ESPN Shop is defective. it has a duplicate pair of pages instead of the 1986 pages. still not sure whether I’m sitting on a gold mine, or something that I should just go out an exchange.

  3. The best story I have to prove my worth takes us back to 2009. My Mom was going in for surgery to have a tumor removed from behind her eye which, if not treated, would cause blindness and – eventually – death. The date of her procedure was schedule for April 6th and, after speaking with her doctor, he assured me that they had caught this early on and the procedure would be almost routine.
My dad called me the morning of and asked what time I’d be getting out of work so I could meet him at the hospital. I then either endeared myself to the hearts of all Mets fans or have become the world’s worst son. “Dad,” I began, “I’m not coming…it’s opening day and the Mets are on the road in Cincinnati.”
After a hearty laugh in which I could tell he thought I was joking, it finally dawned on him that I was serious. He got firm and said, “You know, you only have one mother.” I countered this with, “I also only have one Johan Santana and he only pitches 35 times a year if I’m lucky whereas I can see Mom every day.”
As it turns out, I wouldn’t have been allowed to see my mom anyway since my dad and aunts maxed out the visiting limit and when the anesthesia wore off, my mom was quick to ask to be updated about the Mets, which, in my mind, validated my decision.
So that’s why I think I should win. I chose to ignore a serious medical procedure for my mom so I could watch a 2-1 Mets win against the Reds in April.

  4. I’d love to have this set for the simple fact that it could help avoid my kid’s becoming Yankee fans. Let me explain:

Young children living in New York have a choice to make while growing up. My son is currently four years old and even though my family is mostly mets fans and I myself have started the “brain washing process”, I find that he’s surrounded by Yankee fans at school and on his baseball team. I’m scared for his well being that peer pressure will lead him to turn to the dark side and become one of “those” Yankee fans. You know the type, fake jersey with name on the back, flat brim cap, unaware of who Bucky Dent is.

Now you’ ll ask yourself, “why having this DVD set helps my chances of winning the battle between good and evil?”. Simple. Growing up, i thorough enjoyed two Mets VHS tapes would play non stop at my house. We were hooked. There was “An Amazing Era”, which included the memorable montages of “you gotta have heart”,”traces of love” and my personal favorite “changes” when a player was noted to have been traded. “A Year to Remember” was the other video. Who could forget the montages of Lenny and Wally mixed to Duran Duran, that “buzzing” noise that would play during the game 6 rally and of course, the hot foot segment.

    1. These videos cemented my loyalty as a mets fan, so I would love the videos to not only teach my kids about mets history but to also pave the way for themselves to become long time mets fans.

And if it helps my case, I will most likely be reinvesting the $80 or so into some 2013 Mets jerseys.

      Thanks for the opportunity!

  5. Because I once let Rusty Staub borrow my pen to sign autographs at an exhibition game at West Point! Because I actually own the Mets 25th Anniversary VHS tape, that I purchased at
an actual video store, and the tale it tells ends before the ’86 season!
Because the Mets actually won the ’86 World Series on my birthday! Because I set up a group high-five message on my phone for Mets wins this season with my two
brothers, four nieces and two nephews and Apr to mid-July was a lot of
fun! Because I would share it with my 85-year-old Mom, who already has a brick at Citi Field! Because I have a Mets Fan Twitter list and you’re on it! Because as of now I think I listed the most reasons! And exclamation points! Now I have to go to work!!

  6. i should win. if you try to chose someone besides be, i shall release the hypno-toad. you will not like yourselves after i release the hypno-toad on you. pick me
