The Mets need to get more out of Mr. Met

mr met lady met bobbleheadI was thinking about how the season is another disaster and how not too many people showed up at Citi Field this weekend and thus it occurs to me that the Mets need to get more out of Mr. Met.

The Mets need to make sure that every fan who comes to Citi Field has the best time ever. I don’t mean a good time. I don’t mean an ok time. I don’t mean that the ushers weren’t jerks. I mean the best time ever.

Mr. Met would be a good start to that.

Mr. Met does a good job, but is it enough?

Pre-game I see a decent amount of Mister..but then…

I rarely run into Mr. Met in the hallways during the game. Do you?

I almost never see him upstairs.  Do you?

Some have suggested to me that he is very busy and that he is working the suites.  That may make sense for The Business, but it leaves a lot of us common folks out in the cold.

If Mr. Met cannot be everywhere at once, maybe it is time to dust off the Lady Met character.  Let her walk around and take pictures with fans.  Maybe she could pass out some t-shirts to the fans in the uppers (it’s not just the rich folks who like t-shirts).

The Mets don’t have much going for them.  If they are lucky enough to have someone pay to get into Wilponland, they should make sure that the fan has the best time they have ever had.  Getting more out of Mr. Met and family would be a great start.

  1. Mr. Met wanders the promenade food court at least once a game. You see him before the game in the kid area, and you can see him throughout the stadium at various points during the game. Maybe have the party patrol walk around and give out some prizes like food vouches, merch, sponsors gift cards etc. I don’t think this all has to be left for Mr Met to have to carry this on his shoulders. He already has to deal with that huge head on his shoulders. Poor guy

  2. In 2011 they had the “BJ’s Clubhouse” seating in sections 338 and 339, and one of the benefits of buying a ticket in this area was a guaranteed visit from Mr. Met during the first inning.

And, Mr. Met also has a meet-and-greet outside the Kiddie Field twice each game – 50 minutes before the scheduled start of the game, and during the second inning. (There’s a third opportunity for season ticket holders to meet Mr. Met on weekends, 1:50 before the scheduled start of the game.)

In general, I’d say fans have more access to Mr. Met in Citi Field than they did at Shea Stadium.

  3. ..My 5 year old daughter loves Mr Met….I have been bringing her to Citi since she was 2….with the team struggling again for wins..I think bringing out Lady Met would be a terrific idea…great idea

  4. they should definitely have the 338/339 Mr Met visit section every year.

living in baltimore, I find that the Oriole bird is a far more active mascot than Mr Met is.

  5. Totally agree. The Cyclones did a great job with their mascots, adding Pee-Wee to Sandy a year or two after they started. I don’t see why the Mets couldn’t do the same. Not only would bringing back Ms. Met (or another mascot, etc) be a great idea for nostalgic older fans, it would be great for the little ones. With nothing on the field screaming ROOT FOR THE METS, at the very least the kids could have a mascot to identify with and look forward to. I know I loved (and still do!) Mr. Met when I was a kid, so it should only be natural.

  6. When you compare what the Phanatic does during games to Mr. Met, you hope that the Phanatic gets paid twice of what our beloved Mr. Met gets. I have been to many games and only saw him for the T-Shirt Toss and 7th Inning Stretch. He spends way too much time in the suites. He needs to be more visible. He is a great mascot and someone who can give a positive image of the franchise to fans. At the 51s game, and at most minor league games, you barely go an inning without seeing the mascot, granted the stadiums are smaller, but the kids love it, and heck, I’m 36, and I still like getting my picture with my team’s mascot!

  7. We need the Midget Mets back .. though we know all we’ll get is Mike Lupica and Bob Costas.

  8. Bring back Homer the beagle. He’d fit ritght in with all the other dogs on this team.

  9. Another stupid post. Or, follow the idiotic logic: Maybe they should add more water fountains because they’re thirsty for wins.
