They must have saved a penny a piece by going to black!
Maybe they found a bunch of old black pencils in a box somewhere? Happened at my school once. Found a bunch of old decommissioned copy machines in a back room and took out a ton of unused copy paper. It was in good condition, albeit a little yellow.
