Ultimately, though, teams are measured in victories. For the Mets, 2013 raised as many questions as it answered.

“What if Matt didn’t get hurt? What if David didn’t get hurt? What if Johan didn’t get hurt?” manager Terry Collins said. “You can’t do that. You’ve got to deal with reality, and that was, ‘Hey, we competed the best we could.'”

The result wasn’t entirely a surprise. The Mets never expected to seriously contend this season. The plan all along was to use this year to develop their young players and begin their ascent from the depths of irrelevance in 2014. They had hoped to win a few more games than they did, but that won’t matter if they make the improvements they intend to make this winter.
