Wait, Ike came out of a game after 4 innings because he was tired?

This one just registered in my brain.  Why isn’t Ike playing only four innings a story?

Is he sick? Out of shape? Can’t stand near first base for five more innings?

He feels “beat” and “fatigued” according to the story below.

Tired Ike pulled from Disney game – Mets Blog – ESPN New York.

What am I missing here?  Has he been told he’s the first baseman?  He’s so tired he can’t finish a game?

(For fun replace the word Ike with something like Bonilla or A-Rod and imagine this story.)

What am I not understanding here?

  1. There’s fatigue and then there’s the fatigue that comes from some kind of chronic or even acute illness.   The kind where it is trying even to move your legs.   That can be pretty serious.   I wouldn’t read any more into this until you know the facts.

  2. Wright was quoted as saying it was standard Spring Training operating procedure because Ike had played in however many games in a row at that point.  Kinda dumb to apply such rules to Ike after he’s missed a month and hasn’t been running bases in those games, but it’s still Spring Training, which is all about seemingly senseless or random decisions.
