41 Amazin’ ideas for the Mets #20: Bring Back Old Timers’ Day

Here’s what we’re doing. We are crowdsourcing 41 ideas for the Mets. The ideas can be big or small. Today’s idea is from @mets_bro

It has been 20 years since the Mets have hosted an Old Timer’s Day. One reason for for that according to former Mets VP of business, Dave Howard, “It wasn’t popular, it wasn’t effective, fans weren’t responding and it wasn’t selling very many tickets.” Here’s a newsflash Mets…you’re operating at a loss anyway.

However, I submit that would change now, as we are now 27 years removed from our last World Series title. One key member of that team has already passed on and I think it’s the Mets duty to build a bridge between the past and the present so that our kids can understand and relate in-person to the magic of ’86 – rather than just through “Mets Classics”.

Bring back Kranepool, Hunt, Seaver, Ryan, Koosman, Mays, Staub, Doc, Straw, Mookie, Alfonzo, Piazza and all the other great Mets and fan favorites.

As you can imagine this suggestion has come in a few times.  Here’s another way to approach it…

Let’s bring back old timers’ day. What I’d love to see is a replica of what they did years ago: field a team of Mets against old timers from other teams.

But another, and possibly more appealing idea, is splitting up a whole bunch of Mets alumni into two teams, let’s say, oh, Team Stengel vs. Team Hodges. Fans can vote for captains of the teams – and whoever receives the most and second most votes (it would probably be Piazza/Seaver) can choose the rest of their teams and managers. This way, we could have a nice balance between “older” old-timers and “younger” old-timers. If Willie Mays doesn’t want to play (please God, let him play), he can manage.

The Mets could also let fans design patches for the two teams, a plus for “fan interaction” and for the shameless commerce division of Mets.com. SNY can do endless specials on the game. And oh yeah, don’t put it at 11:00 am. Make it at 1:00 on a Sunday. Start the real game at 3:00. (And then you can have the old timers make appearances on camera, on the jumbotron, etc. Maybe Ron Hodges will help someone find Cuppy).

I love this idea,

Here’s what I need you to do: email me ([email protected]) your ideas. Make my life easy and actually write a few paragraphs about your idea and put your name/twitter handle to it so I can just cut and paste it. I’ll post one idea a day.

Here’s what I need you not to do: waste time with “Sell the Team” or ridiculous trades or general negativity.

The goal here is to crowdsource some cool ideas, publicly post them, and then the Mets can use them or not.

Send your ideas to [email protected] – put something like CROWDSOURCING in the title so I can pick them out easily (lest you get buried in a slew of You Own This Jersey emails.) and again write a little but about your idea. “They should have Kiner’s Korner” isn’t enough. What is Kiner’s Korner? How would it work? What is your vision for it?
