41 More Amazin’ Ideas for the Mets #10: hook up fans like they are celebrities

This is our crowdsourcing series in which you provide ideas for the Mets which they can use or ignore.   Shoot me your idea at [email protected]

Today’s idea is from Jim.

This idea is kind of complicated, so bear with me.

When the Royals won the American League pennant, something was off about the celebration. Paul Rudd was on the field celebrating with the team. There’s nothing wrong with that in itself, but when you think about the thousands of people in the stands who are quite possibly bigger fans than he is, I see a problem – a problem that the Mets can fix. My solution? For events to which celebrities are granted access because of their fame, grant access as well to a small group of selected fans.

Of course, this group of fans would have to be extremely selective – we can all agree that a lifelong fan who lives and dies along with their team deserves exclusive access to that team more than a guy who goes to a game every ten years and only roots so that he can tell people that he’s a baseball fan. So, with that in mind, my idea is pretty simple: a super fan program.

It would be simple to operate: all prospective super fans would submit applications, which covered a number of areas including game attendance, team knowledge, depth of fandom, participation in team events, etc. Fans accepted as super fans would be automatically placed in a database with all other super fans, from which a small number of fans would be randomly selected for “celebrity” experiences, e.g. first row seats behind home plate, throwing out the first pitch, press passes, entry to team functions, SNY interviews, and so on.
