Bigger than June 15, 1977: Wright and Harvey for Dickey and Reyes

wright and harvey

Here’s how this started. Our buddy @stlmetsfan5 started making noise about how my boy All-Star Daniel Murphy is overpaid, and besides there are cheaper alternatives in the system.

So, I suggested that if we don’t want to overpay for production, then it makes sense to play Murphy at third and deal David Wright.  The problem is the $20m contract for 8 HRs.

So….

dickey and reyes

The Mets need a SS.  Jose Reyes fits the bill…but the Mets aren’t upping their payroll by $22M, and the Blue Jays are not making this deal straight up.

Which brings us to Wright and Matt Harvey for R.A. Dickey and Jose Reyes.  That’s $34M in salary minus Wright’s $20 and whatever Matt’s gonna make.  So let’s say we need to clear another $14M to keep it easy.

Well, with Dickey back you don’t need Colon.  Dickey can be the veteran (we know he can handle Queens) and Colon and his $11 million salary.

Daniel Murphy takes over at third, and Flores and Herrera play second.  If they both hit then you can look at Flores at third in 2016.

I’ve gotten you Jose Reyes at SS for an extra $3 million.

Ask yourself…would the Mets be better with Murphy-???SS???-Wright or Herrera/Flores-Reyes-Murph.

And let’s not get too emotional about Matt.  If I told you right now Harvey is out for 2015 you wouldn’t freak.  You’d tell me the Mets have Colon, Zack, deGrom, Wheeler, Montero, Niese, Syndergaard and Gee.

Well I’m telling you you have Dickey, deGrom, Wheeler, Syndergaard and pick whoever you want.

As for the fan-base…Reyes and Dickey will fill the emotional void left by David and Matt.  There will be plenty to keep the media busy with these two back.

Is this nutty?  At first glance yes….but is it?  Search your feelings, you know it to be true.  This makes the 2015 Mets closer to winning it all, and that’s the goal isn’t it?

See you at the Queens Baseball Convention on January 10th.  I’ll be part of the “Meaningful Games in September: Good Enough?” panel (the answer is NO), and our guests include Mookie Wilson and Wally Backman.  Details and tickets at qbc15.com

  1. MikeSilvaMedia come on Mike choose
    a) Murphy-???SS???-Wright
    or
    b) Flores/Dilson- Reyes – Murph.
B is better. You wanna win right?
    Got SP

  2. “STLMetsFan5: metspolice Reyes 3.1 WAR for $16M. That’s even worse than Murphy’s 2 WAR for $5.7M.”

  3. .STLMetsFan5 you realize that the hypothetical replacement from the minors in this case is Tejada. So Tejada at SS it is. Done.

  4. metspolice Actually Ruben Tejada is 1.4 WAR better than a replacement player! (Scary, huh?)

  5. “STLMetsFan5: metspolice Actually Ruben Tejada is 1.4 WAR better than a replacement player! (Scary, huh?)” See. Let’s keep him!

  6. metspolice Jeter was actually -0.3 WAR last year, so there’s your replacement player! (#sarcasm)

  7. .MikeSilvaMedia RA, not young, did win 14 last year. To expect more than 14 from MH is aiming high, plus they have 8 other SPs anyway

  8. metspolice MikeSilvaMedia first off Wright is not being traded. Probably Ever. So your premise goes out the window right off the bat.

  9. metspolice MikeSilvaMedia I’ll say it again. This is incredibly stupid. Like, incredibly. And I like you. But someone has to say it.

  10. I think the Blue Jays do this deal in a second. It’d be a steal for them. I’d love to have Reyes back, but not at this price. Methinks your Harvey hate is starting to color your trade proposals.

  11. metspolice is it telling I was more bothered by Harvey in this? I’d trade wright and any pitcher for that upgrade.

  12. .druck808 but you’d have to get Toronto to agree to take on DWs contract. That’s the challenge. Right now 5 for 7 straight is a no-brainer

  13. .lagranderusty if you could 5 for 7 straight up and move Murph to 3rd and play Dilson at 2B you have improved 3 positions

  14. metspolice this is the dumbest thing ever, and you trying to rationalize is a shade dumber than that. Bravo!

  15. .lagranderusty but Toronto wouldn’t take on DW’s contract, which I was all for, but right here today looks worrisome. 8 HRs dude.

  16. metspolice I think you’ve been trapped in Casa de Mets Policia way to long . Go out & take a walk … Buy a snickers perhaps

  17. metspolice this isn’t even unfollow worthy, this is “you should be banned from having anything to do with the mets in your profile” worthy

  18. metspolice It all hinges on 2 Wright Qs:
    1) Will he be back to his old numbers? (A: ?)
    2) Would R.A. be the leader #5 is? (A: Maybe/likely)

  19. “TFC3Tweets: metspolice But its so nutty, it just might work…”Imagine if the Red Sox ever traded Nomar. Crazy.

  20. kcos194 metspolice first I thought u guys were joking to get some tweets fired up now I just think ur a joke stick to the Murphy Pom Pom

  21. kcos194 metspolice u guys one to trade wright+Harvey to keep a half a tool player with no pop no speed no defense+is lost on the base path

  22. If we don’t want to overpay for production why would we trade for Reyes?  22 mil for 9 HRs even playing half his games  in the homerdome in Toronto?
