It’s Not About The Wins – It’s About The Fire

So Sandy thinks the Mets can win 89 games in 2015.

That’s nice.

And it’s relatively safe.  It stays below that magic 90 number (remember that from last year?)

And that’s the problem in Flushing right now – everything is “safe.”

Worse than the 89 win prediction was Sandy’s other comment

“And so we’re comfortable going into spring training…”

we’re comfortable?

COMFORTABLE?

Comfortable means no further movement is needed.

Comfortable is a loser’s mentality.

Comfortable doesn’t get you the trophy.

And that in a nutshell is the attitude in Flushing…or more precisely, the lack of an attitude.

There’s no fire in anyone’s belly.  And when glimmers of that show up, it’s snuffed out.

Shannon has often said that Matt Harvey should just be Joe Namath and own the swaggering, cocky, playboy image.  New York loves that.

Never going to happen with this team, and I am sure that message has been sent.

Their captain – who once was a possible HOFer and now might barely be Hall of Garvey – is blah.  A nice guy to be sure but no observable fire.  Leo Durocher had something to say about that.
The guy with the most fire and drive they let get away in free agency without getting anything in return.
Nobody on this team – nobody – would be able to hang with 86. On or off the field.
And as I see it right now, nobody – either currently in uniform or in the front office – would be able to lead this team to success.
Safe won’t get you a trophy.
But I guess it will get you a mall.
