This Day In Mets Infamy With Rusty: The “Boo Birds Stay Home” Edition

It seems like every year I need to write a column pertaining to booing players/coaches/trainers during the pregame ceremonies for the Mets home opener, and this year it will be no different.

In a scant few hours our team – the squad that we hope will break the streak of 6 straight losing seasons will take the field for the first time this season at Citi Field. During the pregame ceremonies everyone from Jon Rauch, Bobby Parnell, Ike Davis, Mike Pelfrey and Chris Young were booed mercilessly by the Mets faithful. Hell even Ray Ramirez has been booed.

Whether your desire to vent your spleen is warranted or not may I please stress that this season is still just a week old and I know that the Mets are off to an inauspicious 3-3 start but maybe if we show a little restraint and actually support some of the players that are struggling with applause and  instead of disdainful boos it might help them relax and focus on producing instead of dreading the fans reaction if they strikeout, pop out, commit and error etc.

I know your argument, you bought the ticket and you have the right to boo if you like as long as it is not done in bad taste. But I  urge you to be patient  and hold your tongues until the actual game starts to vent, or better yet wait a couple of days before you unleash your fury and hostility towards the players.

We are New York fans, I know we are sick and tired of being the joke of Major League Baseball, but what separates us from the classless Phillies fan base – a bunch of mongrels that pukes on children,  gets into fist fights with each other and are just all around neonates ? Lets be classy here, especially if this team can start clicking this could be the year that we sniff playoff contention  and relevance again.

So before you decide to shower a player with boos during the pregame ceremonies – whether it’s Tejada, Flores or whomever is on your bad side – please reconsider . Thank you.

And with that said…. HERE COMES THE INFAMY !!!!!
