This Day In Mets Infamy With Rusty: The “Putting Out The Welcome Matz” Edition

Congratulations Steven Matz on your promotion to the Mets. Today more than likely started out rather tedious, sitting through 6 innings of uninspired baseball. But I am sure you are amped up to make your Mets debut .

I see you have been issued  32 as your uniform number. In the history of the Mets 28 players have worn that number.

The first was pitcher Jack Hamilton way back in 1966. The last player prior to you was starting pitcher  Lannan. Both Hamilton and Lannan were  those players that you barely remember played for the Mets.

Some more higher profile players that have donned the number 32 for the Mets included Latroy Hawkins, Kevin Mitchell ( in 1984)  and 1972 Rookie of the Year winner, John Matlack.

I hope your career is closer to Matlack’s than Lannan’s  but just for now let me wish you good luck.

And with that said….. HERE COMES THE INFAMY !!!

Mets alumni celebrating birthdays today include:

Mets bench coach from ’03-04, Don Baylor turns 66 (1949).

Middle reliever from the ’85 season, Joe Sambito is 63(1952)

Outfielder from the ’04 season, Richard Hidalgo turned 40  (1975)

Mo Vaughn took the money and ran !
