This Day In Mets Infamy With Rusty: The “5 Songs That Best Define The Next 2 Months

I have two passions in my life – music and the New York Mets. My two earliest memories of both was around 1977 when I was 5. I remember being taken to Old Timer’s Day at Shea Stadium, sitting in the upper deck trying to make heads or tails of exactly what was going on. I can’t remember if the Mets won or lost that day but I do believe that was the day that my loyalty to the Orange and Blue was cemented .

The first song I ever recall remembering that wasn’t from “Sesame Street” was either “New Kid In Town” by the Eagles or “Stilletto” by Billy Joel.

In my early teen years my two ambitions in life was either to play Left Field for the Mets, or to become a guitarist like Ace Frehley . Obviously my talents weren’t good enough to reach either goal ( although I did become a passable bassist), but my love and passion for both rages on.

For the past 7 years I have mostly been an optimistic Mets fan through the dark times, and if you have read my post’s either here or at any of the other fine blogs that I used to write for you know that I like to pair songs with certain aspects of the Mets season.

Well here are in my opinion the top 5 songs that best describe the next two months of the season.

5. “The Boys Are Back In Town”  by Thin Lizzy . Yes the boys from Flushing are back and they look like they mean business !

4. “War Machine” by Kiss. With a lineup that includes  offensive threats such as Cespedes, Duda, d’Arnauld and Granderson this team is primed to slug it out with the best of what any other team can trot out.

3. “Shot Down In Flames” by AC/DC. Is there any other song that best describes how the Nationals were dispatched last weekend ?

2. “No More Mr. Nice Guy” by Alice Cooper. It is perfectly obvious that this Mets team are through being the door mat for the National League !

And at number 1. “Shoot ‘Em Down” by Twisted Sister. With the bulk of the rest of the remaining games against sub .500 teams it should be a given that this team will be playing meaningful games in October. Shoot ’em down indeed !

Do you agree/disagree with this list ? If you do list it in the comment section below.

And with that said…. HERE COMES THE INFAMY !!!

Mets alumni celebrating a birthday today includes:

Middle reliever from the ’05 season, Danny Graves is 42 (1973).

Spot starter/middle reliever from the ’04 season, Tyler Yates is 38 (1977).

Current fifth outfielder and defensive wizard, Kirk Nieuwenhuis turns 28 (1987).

Other transactions of note include:

The New York Mets traded original Mets outfielder,Frank Thomas to the Philadelphia Phillies for pitcher, Gary Kroll and third baseman, Wayne Graham on August 7, 1964.

The New York Mets released George Foster on August 7, 1986. This paved the way for the return of one time matinee idol, Lee Mazzilli”s return. I had the “pleasure” of meeting Foster a week before his release but that’s a different story for another time.

The New York Mets released back up outfielder, Shane Spencer on August 7, 2004.

The New York Mets claimed fifth outfielder,  Ricky Ledee on waivers from the Los Angeles Dodgers on August 7, 2006.

The New York Mets released reserve infielder, Alex Cora on August 7, 2010.

Mo Vaughn is a genius of himself
