This Day In Mets Infamy With Rusty: The “It Almost Happened 3 Years Ago Today” Edition

2015 Topps deGrom

Yes it was three years ago today that Sandy Alderson made a trade. A trade that could have ended up as one of the most infamous in the long history of the Mets franchise.  It could have been as big as Amos Otis for Joe Foy, Nolan Ryan for Jim Fregosi – and quite possibly as bad as Tom Seaver for Zachary, Flynn, Henderson and Norman.

Yes on this date in 2012 the Mets acquired past his prime catcher, Kelly Shoppach from the Boston Red Sox for a middle reliever with a lot of potential – Pedro Beato. Shoppach didn’t distinguish himself in his 28 games with the Mets, going .203 with 3 homers and 10 RBI’s but the haul for Shoppach could have been worse – much worse !
It was recently revealed that Boston was originally asking for an undistinguished prospect that was in the lower tier of the Mets minors. A pitcher that was recently converted from shortstop after he was drafted from Stetson University in Florida.

Yes this pitcher that the Mets almost gave up for a rental is none other than last seasons Rookie of the Year and current M.V.P candidate, Jacob deGrom !

Thank you Sandy for not pulling off a trade that most likely would have been infamous !!!!

And with that said…. HERE COMES THE INFAMY !!!!!

Mets alumni celebrating a  birthday today includes:

Middle reliever from the ’00 season, Eric Cammack turns 40 (1975).

Reserve outfielder from the ’02 season, McKay Christensen  also turns 40 today (1975).

Other transactions of note include:
The New York Mets signed free agent middle reliever, Barry Jones on August 14, 1992. In his 17 appearances Jones was god awful. He went 2-1 with a 9.39 E.R.A. – but he did earn one save.

Mo Vaughn once wrestled a bear !!!!

  1. You need a teaser like
“The Mets almost traded deGrom for this guy!”
MT “lagranderusty: Here is my post thttp://t.co/xYKQMb5pkc #deGrom”

  2. metspolice lagranderusty Hard to know how long the Mets thought about it before saying no. More like the Sox asked for de Grom.
