Daniel Murphy’s Final Days on the Mets (#imwith28)

Before we get all crazy town with the Subway Series, let’s take a minute to appreciate Daniel Murphy, the soon to be ex-Met.

daniel murphy thanks mets

I say soon to be ex-Met because, despite winning making you forget this, the Mets are cheap.  I don’t believe they are going to re-sign Murph.  Nothing about the GM makes me think he cares for Murph as a player, an there lower priced options like Flores and Herrera to play second next year.

Murph came to us back at Shea Stadium, and played 49 games hitting .313 in left field.  Boy that all feels like so long ago.

In 2009 he was the left fielder, which didn’t go all that great, but wound up doing a nice job mopping up for Carlos Delgado at first, and somehow leading the team with 12 Home Runs, which was more about how much that team sucked (and David Wright’s power eroding) than anything else.

On to 2010.  Ike Davis was anointed by the beat writers to be some sort of second coming of Will Grace or Keith Hernandez or Don Mattingly.  Murph winds up getting hurt trying to learn second base and loses an entire year.  The Mets sell Murph attire at deep discounts and its assumed we will never see him again.

2011, Murph hits .320 mopping up for Ike and David and playing some second.

From there, some consistency as mostly the second baseman (again covering for other guys, notably The Captain, as needed) and an All Star in 2014.

This year, injuries and some slightly below par numbers.

7 seasons, 948 hits, a .287 BA and even a positive WAR even though most of you think some imaginary player is better.  (I imagine a player named Dilson Herrera, lifetime .206).

I’m sad that the Mets will be too cheap to bring you back Murph.  Hopefully you wind up somewhere cool like Boston or San Francisco, and not in exile in Cleveland or something (I’ll save that for Two Face).

Daniel Murphy 2014 All Star Game

So one last tip of the cap before we all get distracted by stupid interleague play and then a playoff run.  Maybe you can split down with a ring, something even Mike Piazza didn’t do.

Holy crap, you’re inept. Will Grace?  I can’t tell if you were trying to compare him to Will Clark or Mark Grace….the internet is your friend, you tool.  Do some research.

  2. metspolice but would you pay the sort of cash he’d want, esp with impact on potential re signing of Cespedes?
