Prices For Tickets To David Wright’s Final Game Up Near 400%

Nearly four years to the day after Derek Jeter played his last game as New York Yankee, another New York City team is bidding farewell to baseball royalty. And demand for a chance to see New York Mets third baseman David Wright play his final game is through the roof.

Wright played his whole career for the Mets, but has not set foot on the baseball diamond at Citi Field since 2016. Due to injuries. He’ll return for the season-ending series with the Miami Marlins – an otherwise meaningless game – and, according to news reports will start at third base on Sept. 29. Wright, 35, will be activated from the disabled list for the game.

The average asking price for tickets to that game shot up from $65 on last week, before Wright held a press conference to announce his retirement plans, to $320 on Friday. Given Wright’s Hall of Fame career – 14 All-Star selections, five Gold Gloves, five Silver Slugger awards and five World Series wins – ticket prices are likely to continue to rise as the date gets closer.

In addition to Wright’s retirement, the Mets had already planned fireworks for the final Saturday night game of the season. Wright will be activated on September 25, and leaving open the possibility that he could enter a Mets game as a pinch hitter during the Mets final homestand, which begins that day against Atlanta, and ends on September 30 vs. the Marlins.

When Jeter played his final game as a Yankee on September 25, 2014, secondary market ticket prices peaked at $835 before settling at $768. The Yankees were battling for a playoff spot and Jeter’s final home game was against the AL East rival Baltimore Orioles. Neither the Mets nor the Marlins will make the playoffs.

According to TicketIQ.com, the get-in price for Wright’s final home game was $115 last Friday. For comparison, the get-in price for every other game between now and then is less than $10.

The game is nearly sold out on the secondary market, but TicketIQ.com has seats available high above the third baseline in Promenade Reserved 526, Row 17 for $185  with the company’s Low Price Guarantee. For an up-close-and-personal view of Wright, TicketIQ.com also has seats between home place and third base at field-level Section Metropolitan Box 122, Row 15 starting at $600.
