Today will largely be an off-day for The Mets Police as I’m attending McCartney tonight, and am running around during the daytime, but I leave you with this thought.
I know i’m supposed to believe, but I just don’t.
Even if I wanted to buy in that the cavalry is coming if we could only hang on long enough, it doesn’t matter. What do Carlos Beltran, Jose Reyes, Carlos Delgado and John Maine have in common? They all were on the teams that spit up late leads in 2007 and 2008.
Even if they come back, what makes you think they’ll make up 7 or so games (depending on what happened last night). Even 7 games ahead of the Phillies they couldn’t win, how are they going to make up 7 games.
I’m sorry Ghost of Tug, I’d love to be with you, but I can’t this time.
Don’t forget SNY is showing Game 1 of the 1969 World Series tonight.

I do believe the Mets will make a run when and if the core starters return. The problem is even if and when that happens, it won't matter because the deficit is too great. As you said back in May, it'll be similar to '87. But this time it won't be close enough to have as defining a singular moment as one home run with the division lead on the line.
I don't believe. Last night sealed it for me. They were a glorified .500 team when the full squad was in place.
I can't disagree with Sparks (here) but I can't totally agree either about making a run. This season will tell not to be similar to '87 but to '91.
Worse than the Mets more than likely coming up short, why aren't management as well as manager being called on the carpet. No real first basemen as Delgado is basically done in 09, Adam Dunn, the Nats would love to save 5 mill for a reasonable prospect (I know we are thin in that area). We are throwing double A players out there due to injury and that crap happens, and you occasionally find a keeper. But when you have a situation that you have already prepared for and that guy is healthy, how does he not get in. Today bottom of 8th, bases loaded 2 outs the Mets bring in their 4th pitcher of the innin g with the game on the line. F-Rod?? Oh god no, he just pitches the 9th even though he hasnt worked since the break. Manuel gives Stokes a shot (it worked!!), but its not the point. The save was in the 8th inning, the game was on the line, and that didnt agree with the formula (F-Rod pitches the 9th). He wasn't tired or overworked…if Stokes gives up the game, everyone screams, but it did work but Stokes pitching in this spot should happen when F-Rod has worked 3 straight nights. What makes me laugh (well, cry), is Mets put up 3 in the top of 9 and we march out FRod for no good reason at all! This team needs a Ray Knight punching Eric Davis moment, but it will never happen, they are homogenized. I watch west coast baseball due to living in Vegas and I watch the Pods who stink but they remind me of my terrible Mets of '78-80 that showed moments of skill but overall stunk. The Pods have a bad team great park, you can get in to ANY game for 5 dollars, they have food specials, they try to con you into enjoying a day at the park despite their team. Remember that feeling? WHen the Mets deliver a 75 win season and a million excuses…I think watching a 63 win season from SD will have been more fun. Only the Mets can win a game and make me more depressed!
