Time For The New York Mets To Move On Without Shortstop Jose Reyes

The Mets once had a fan favorite catcher who hit 40 home runs. He was
also hurt all the time. They went out and got Mike Piazza and cast
aside Todd Hundley like he was Nick Evans.

In other sports we've seen teams successfully move on without a key
piece rather than wait forever on injuries (think Joe Montana.)

There was a time when Nomar Garciaparra was Mr. Boston and in a
conversation about being the best shortstop in the game. It wasn't
meant to be.

Based upon history, based upon the way the Mets handle injuries, based
upon what you've seen from the player in 2009, is there anything that
makes you think Jose Reyes will play a full productive season in 2010?

The Mets now need a shortstop to go along with the two starting
pitchers and left fielder they need. You can forget about kicking
Danny Murphy out of town, if he slumps again there's always an
expensive bat available in July.

They need a shortstop. Forget about your fantasy of Reyes walking and
then stealing second an third. It isn't real.

If Jose shows up midseason and is a superstar that's great. He can
have his job back or he can play second or whatever. They can use
their clib option for 2011 or they can set him free Worry about
that stuff in the unlikely case that a healthy Reyes shows up. In
2009 they kept a seat warm for him and he never sat down. Don't wait
again.

This is going to be some marketing job for the Mets to sell tickets.
I have some ideas….tomorrow.

2006 is over. Move on.

  1. You should probably stick to commenting on black jerseys rather than player personnel decisions. Your favorite player is Alex Cora and your least favorite is Jose Reyes. That about says it all. Good day.

  2. I agree that the Mets can't afford to plan on having a healthy Reyes to start the season, but I'm not ready to run him out of town yet.

  3. Why don't we trade Johan Santana, David Wright and Carlos Beltran, seeing as they can't win, and replace them with Eckstein, Mike Lowell, Tim Redding, and Shane Victorino?
