A few weeks ago I had the opportunity to meet and talk briefly with Hall of Fame 3B Mike Schmidt. Of course what happens when a Mets blogger meets the greatest Phillie of all time? We discuss the Mets current third-baseman.
Given the recent discussion (relatively recent) on where Wright ranks in terms of all-time third-baseman I had to ask Schmidt what his opinions were.
Schmidt said that Wright was “…a nice guy. He’s a good young player, in fact I was just up in New York and saw him.” Schmidt continued that he liked the way Wright plays, but when asked if he thought Wright had a chance to be an all-time great, he down-played that idea: “It’s way too early for that don’t you think? He’s got a long way to go yet.”
As a side note – Schmidt (greatest player I ever saw play IMO) is tall (maybe 6’2″) but is of human proportions. Just saying
