Revisiting Mets manager Casey Stengel

I was watching Ken Burns’ Baseball last night and found a new appreciation for Casey.

As old as I am, Casey was way before my time, but it comes across in the videos how charming a crazy old man as manager can be.

Isn’t this who you want running the team?

When Terry’s time is up and the team heads for another down-cycle let’s get someone like this in there. Imagine a half-shot old man version of Bobby V?

Tomorrow I will tell you why 37 should be unretired, and it is not out of disrespect for the man.

By the way, color photos of Mets from that era are awesome.

  1. “Can’t anybody here play this game?”….

It is wasn’t for him we would never had the “AMAZIN METS”

  2. I was born almost ten years after the man passed away, but you can usually find me taking in Mets games in my #37 Stengel shirt.

  3. That color still is from the infamous piece of film where Casey said that NY’s kids don’t say mommy, daddy they say Metsie, Metsie, Metsie!

    1. and people bring those wonderful placards…you see them in left field…a few innings later, they are in right field.

  4. I saw casey in 1965 at shea..his uniform was always to big for him and he was such a nice guy to the kids and fans..
