How might a soccer field fit on Citi Field? Maybe like this!

Shannon,

I was curious how a soccer field would fit into Citi Field. So I used google maps and cut a soccer field from somewhere in NJ and stuck it into a aerial photo of Citi at the same altitude.

What I noticed pretty quickly is that the soccer field fits remarkably well into the ballpark. It’s almost cut right into the stadium. Is it a coincidence?

The straight wall down the right-field line.

The length from the 3rd base line tarp to the deep right center-field fence near the bullpens.

The most convenient fit looks like the “MoZone” cutout that fits a soccer goal perfectly.

You have to wonder if the designers had soccer in mind. I also wonder how the Mets players would feel if they discovered that the reason right center-field is so deep is so Sokratis Papastathopoulos can take a corner-kick?

Keep up the good work

Thanks,

Joe

  1. I bet the players already know that. We just havent realized it because there hadnt been a soccer game yet. Isnt a football field about the same size ?

  2. I guess we can take comfort in the fact that the thousands of people unable to see the left fielder will have a stellar view of midfield. I’d like to see them host more soccer games and football games. They have ignored these opportunities thus far. They could even pull a play from the “Yankee Stadium” playbook and promote every non-Mets event with archival footage of Pele, The Beatles & Joe Namath in an effort to manufacture history for the new building.

  3. Designed with soccer in mind? I am still question if management even had baseball in mind when they designed citi.

  4. well if your tickets are in the left field area… bring binoculars. very very very powerful binoculars.

  5. shannon,

are you sure that’s the correct dimensions for a soccer pitch? looks a tad big…has anyone compared how a soccer pitch vs. a football fleld would fit into shea citi?

and don’t you need more room behind the goals & corners? i don’t honestly know, but it seems that angle would give you the same problems as you had a wrigley this fall with the northwestern/illinois game

    1. absolutely Phil … an professional soccer field should be more than 70 yards wide and at least 110 yards long and soccer fields have very little requirements regarding space outside the lines.
