Baseball still is best when it’s consumed live, but try telling that to Mets fans who’ve just seen the bullpen blow another late-inning lead. Or see the Phillies swoop in and take two of three. Or hear Wilpon trash his own team. Or keep waiting for Gary Carter’s number to be retired.
These are all factors that contribute to a devaluation of a once-great franchise. It already feels like a million years ago when the Mets drew four million fans in 2008. Almost half of that armada is gone, and as the Wilpons are learning, it won’t be easy to get them back.

Keith was just talking about how long it took him to get to Shea in the morning. It’s at the end of the 7 line. Guys who live in Lon Giland, you chose to live in the boonies, not me. This is supposedly a NYC team, and NYC is a public transportation town, but these Mets are virtually inaccessible by their supposed bedrock fanbase in Brooklyn. Taking trains home after a Mets game to Brooklyn: almost two hours.
That’s a big, big reason why Brooklyn people, who love baseball, ain’t showing up to see a second rate team.
