I’ve grew up with dogs, I love dogs and I’ve seen that dog outside Citi a lot too and he certainly never looks happy to me. Dressing up a dog and making him sit for hours in the heat is a cheap form of entertainment and a cheap way to make a living.
I was at a game a few weeks ago and some PETA type (she was wearing a shirt) was literally screaming at the guy.
All I could do was roll my eyes at the hyperbole that exploded around this.
You can roll your eyes all you want. It still ain’t right.
There’s a big difference between walking your dog around citifield and at the puerto rican day parade as opposed to being at the places and having her beg for money all day.
Maybe all these people worried about this happy, well adjusted, friendly, dog’s living conditions should traipse around to the back side of Citi Field, and show some concern for the dogs living in filthy, unhealthy conditions amongst the Iron Triangles many chop-shops.

Please don’t let someone else’s foolish behavior (PETA) keep you from seeing and judging with your own eyes whether this dog is being mistreated or not. Maybe he’s being treated OK and maybe he isn’t. It’s important to ask the question, find out, and follow through if not. That’s all there is to it.

I have been following the story about Coffee(that is the dog’s name) for some months. This man does not work, he begs ,oh not really he has his dog beg FOR him. The sign on the dog’s neck reads “I like people, but not cheap people”. He states he makes $400/game. The water, rug, and sometimes shade are only due to people alerting the ASPCA. Coffee has been documented to sit for four plus hours at a time in temperatures in excess of 100 degrees. With a hat and/or mask on he is even hotter and because he has a pipe glued to his mouth, he cannot pant, which is the only way dogs can “sweat” or cool off. Do you think a dog would choose this life? @FormerDirtDot- how do you think we can get people to care about hidden dogs if we can’t get them to care about inhumane acts in front of them.
What bothers me the most is making the dog hold a pipe in its mouth for long periods of time… it’s unnatural and I’m sure uncomfortable for the dog.
This dog is anything but fine, you can see the shock collar that is under that bandanna when up close, the owner shocks the dog when he does anything but sit still and look “cute” for the people. It was not until recently that the dog was even given water and somewhere out of the sun to sit. It should be a criminal offence what this man is doing to his dog. Nothing but pain for that poor dog. I would like to see someone who thinks otherwise to sit dressed up in a fur suit in the sun and more clothes on top of it holding a cigar in your mouth for hours on end and then tell me its not cruel.
@Richie G the Mets can’t stop it. The dog is on CITY property. Not Mets’ Property. If anyone is going to have to shut it down it would be the City of NY and the ASPCA.
Only a complete ignoramus would say the dog is happy. Dogs are not supposed to wear shock collars, sun glasses, ball caps, t-shirts, and hold a pipe in their mouths while being forced to sit still for hours on concrete. Happy dogs are dogs that are loved, able to run and play, and move about like a normal living being. Ask yourself what kind of loser would show up at all kinds of venues on a regular basis, asking for money for his dressed-up dog? It’s a disgrace and the man should be shamed.. as should anyone who gives him money.
why do some stupid people give this bastard money? He makes tax free money abusing this dog. The mets might not own the property but they can make it very hard for him. Just because other dogs live in bad conditions does not make Coffee’s condition any better sitting in the hot sun with a shock collar? she cant drink bottled water because she has no hands. Shocking her to keep a pipe in her mouth and not stand up? That is cruel.
I’ve been around dogs all my life… Metspolice, did it ever occur to you that the dog might be wagging his tail because he’s getting affection and attention from you and doesn’t get it at home? If you have dogs, you must know that a dog can’t possibly be happy spending his days that way… You try having your dog sit in apparels without laying down or walking around, then dare tell me that your dog was ok with that… I just really don’t think so…
This is been going for a while now and its mostly based on speculations, attacks and emotions gathered but not enough facts. Yes, there is a shock collar, whether is your position on this. They are LEGAL, and i doubt coffee gets shocked until have a neck burn or something like that. If you think its wrong, then fine, that doesnt mean its wrong for them or the owner and that doesnt make them bad people either. The pipe well even if she cant pant for a while, it still removable between breaks, or are you guys comforable 24/7 when you work?
Its simple to jump into the internt bandwagon. You only see what you see or what do you want to see, so we dont get the full picture. Aspca have stated she is fine, rescue ink as well. So take it in and move on with you lives. Thank you. While you are worrying over a well take care dog, thousands of other cats and dogs even children are suffering.
I also have a dog that i love, but i treat him a way most cultures wouldnt go for, etc..not sleeping inside, or high premium dog food, but hes a happy dog and so i’am.

glued?where did you get its glued?i have read testimonies of others who have seen coffee as well and its not glued, it can be removed whenever she has to drink water. On the other hand, there is a shade, so she is not out in the heat all the time.

whats wrong with your dog helping its owner make a few bucks? There is nothing wrong either with a dog wearing clothes or accessories, its not like she wears all those things alll the time. Shock collars are legal and they are ok if used correctly.

Usually agree with you on almost everything, but you are wrong, bro. I captured the picture a few weeks ago of the actual shock collar. When the dog attempts to lay down the owner zaps it so it bolts upright. Dude needs to get a real job.
As a big Mets fan it makes me sick that I always have to walk by this poor dog every time I get off the 7 train on my way to Citi Field. As has been pointed out already, dogs panting is the equivalent of humans sweating, and this dog is not allowed to do so because some idiots think it’s cute that she’s holding a cigar in her mouth. Are there worse abuse cases in the world? Obviously. That doesn’t make this anymore right. I know the Mets can’t technically do anything, but I’m sure if they put enough pressure on the cops something can be done. Isn’t panhandling a crime?
Glad to see that most people here got it right! Coffee certainly doesn’t look happy in the last picture with tail between the legs….this is not natural behavior for a dog to be performing for hours on end! Besides all that, that lazy loser really needs to get a job!!!!

you cant judge from a picture alone. Again i seen dogs perform from a certain time to another. ie, fun parks, and Coffee is doing anything but “performing”. He is a dog trainer, thats a job..

It is a very hard economy… and some people are going to crazy lengths to makes ends meat. But this is not a way to do it. At least rid the dog of the pipe… lower the games and hours… make him a website instead if you want him to be “famous” but change the way it’s all being done. A dog ANY DOG who is forced to be outside in the heat w/out proper shelter is being abused. Shock collars need to be outlawed. And people on here who state they have outside dogs… why have them if you are going to keep them outside all the time? What is the purpose?

Mr. Ang, not to veer off topic but you stated you only keep your dog outdoors. There’s a reason why dogs should be kept indoors – they’re pack animals and by keeping them outdoors you are separating them from the pack. Dogs would only do this to each other as punishment and it is psychologically damaging no matter how “happy” you may think the dog is. Also, I sure hope your dog has adequate shelter because assuming you live in New York, it is absolutely cruel and illegal to leave them exposed to the elements. And the reason why some people give “high premium dog food” is because we actually care about our dog’s health and happiness. It’s not surprising you defend Coffee’s owner given the minimal care you seem to give your own dog.
Hi Tom, no i dont live in NY, nor the us, but im familiar with some of the animal laws. I’m raised in a family where dogs should be outside because they dont have time to house trained them, so if they pee or poop on a carpet/ floor whatever, its the dogs fault, so he should be outside. However, we take him inside during the times where the heat strikes the most and spend sometime with us. About the dog food, we dont have the money to buy that kind of expensive dog food, pedigree yes doesnt mean we are bad owners. Its the saying if i cant even have a beef steak for dinner, why should the dog? still in case of vet care, he will have its trip to the vet. Its just a culture thing i guess.
Mr. Ang, I too come from a family/culture where animals were expected to be outside as they were deemed too dirty to be inside. I do not believe you are a bad person for keeping them outside, I just want you to understand the reasons why they should be inside. There is a reason why most shelters in the US will not even let you take a dog if you intend to keep them outside all day. As for the food issue, I am not rich myself and certainly understand if you cannot afford to feed premium food. I just took issue with the earlier implication that it was pointless to give them a higher quality food. And finally back to the actual issue of Coffee – if she indeed does have a shock collar to keep her from laying down (and pictures have shown she does), then I don’t see how anyone can say that this is not cruel no matter what cultural differences we may have. Just try staying in one position out of fear of getting shocked and see how you like it. Also, the fact that she has to hold that stupid pipe in her mouth is not only uncomfortable but it’s dangerous in high temperatures because dogs “sweat” by panting. Obviously she can’t pant if that pipe is in there. I think we just have to agree to disagree as we have a fundamental difference about the way dogs should be treated – I and many other fans do not think dogs were made to be put to work for our amusement, while others like yourself do.
Mr Ang if you dont train a child he will pee and poop in your house. Is that the child’s fault too? If that happens I clean it up. Simple as that. I try to take him out for walks so he is comfortable. I dont give my dogs steak. I just feed them to make sure they are as healthy as me. Dog food is not expensive. If a person cant afford it than a person should not have kids or dogs. Every culture tells you to be kind to your pets. They become part of your family. I know this because I have family in different countries and cultures.
