New York Mets third baseman David Wright has been named National League Player of the Week for the period of August 29-September 4, 2011. The announcement was made earlier today on MLB Network.
In eight games last week, Wright led the National League with 13 hits and five doubles while tying for second in the league with seven RBI and 21 total bases. His .500 batting average (13-for-26) and .594 on-base percentage both ranked third among qualifying National Leaguers last week, while his .808 slugging percentage ranked fifth. The Norfolk, Virginia native added a home run and six runs scored to his totals, helping the Mets to a 6-2 record on the week. Wright collected at least one hit in each of the eight games, including five multi-hit performances. On Monday, August 29th, the right-handed hitting slugger went 2-for-4 with a double and a pair of RBI as the Mets earned a 5-1 victory and swept their doubleheader with the visiting Marlins. After a 2-for-4 performance in a losing effort on Tuesday, Wright posted his third consecutive multi-hit performance on Wednesday, going 2-for-3 with two doubles and a run scored in the 3-2 victory. In Thursday’s series finale at Citi Field, Wright went 1-for-2 with two walks, one run scored and two RBI in a 7-5 Mets win. On Friday, the 28-year-old took his hit parade on the road as he homered, doubled and drove in three runs en route to a 7-3 victory against Washington at Nationals Ballpark. The double was his 20th of the season, marking the seventh consecutive season that he has reached that plateau. In Sunday’s rubber match of the three-game set in D.C., Wright connected for a pair of singles and scored a run as the Mets defeated the Nationals, 6-3. In 41 games since returning from the disabled list on July 22nd, Wright is hitting .325 (51-for-157) with six home runs, 31 RBI and 27 runs scored. This is his third career weekly award, having won previously for the weeks ending August 28, 2005 and June 18, 2006.
