My sub-conscious made up a fake broadcast where Howie and Wayne were talking about uniforms, which got my mind rolling about the 2012 ticket plans (I think I will blog that info tomorrow)…so the title of this blog post segues us nicely into The End.
Mike Vaccaro (whose work I always enjoy) took today to write about how an entire generation has now grown up as Yankees fans. I suspect this will cause the Mets to be the #2 franchise in town for quite some time…but as the article reminds us, New York has two million front-runners, and they’ll abandon the Bronx for Queens at the first opportunity.
Mookie has left the team because of a death in the family and Wally Backman will finish up as 1B coach.
Darryl Strawberry has some words of wisdom for Jose Reyes, who has 4 games left with the New York Mets (before re-signing at a budget friendly number and then Sandy finds 20 more players for $55 million).
“Being successful here, they appreciate it a little bit more than anywhere else you go, you’re just another player that comes along in other places, but the fans here never forget, the legacy you leave for yourself here is incredible and Jose has a chance to do that,” Strawberry said. “He’s a remarkable player, he’s had some wonderful years, done some wonderful things and he still has a chance to do some greater things before his career is all over.”
The way I remember it, Darryl spent like a year and a half talking about going to LA, and then did. However, as we’ve seen, today’s Strawberry seems a better man than the one from 25 years ago.
Last night I finally hit the Mets wall. I think it was the first game all year I didn’t check in on. No twitter, email, didn’t change the channel, didn’t look up the score. I just slothed on my couch trying to empty out the DVR.
@JBMets19 sent over this last night…looks like I wasn’t the only one who was bored.
4 games to go. Time to start hording those generic articles.
I was there last night. I had tickets to Friday’s game, only to have it rained out. I found out during Game One that my tickets were valid for Game Two. My father and I packed up and went to Citi Field. The stadium was very vacant.
One Phillies fan even yelled out that New York had given up on them. There was pain in the eyes of the vendors walking around who had been there since 11 am. A lot of the food places were closing up around the fourth inning.
It was a very spooky night around the park, but the Mets came back against Blanton and a bunch of other Phillies pitchers. The crowd was actually loud despite being scattered and thin. Even when they are out of it and nobody believes anymore, fans are still there to ride out the wave.
There were no boo’s, except for Phillies fans. There were cheers, especially for pictures of Reyes from the dugout. That’s what a guy like Jose can’t be sold anywhere else. There’s gonna be a lot of soul searching for him in the coming months, but it starts with this homestand that ends Wednesday.
It was spooky…I was on the Promenade and in the 6th inning went for a soda and it was desolate…the Team Store employees at that level were asking eachother if anything else on that level was still open. We moved down to field level about 15 rows from the Met dugout in the 7th…didn’t need to show tickets…saw Reyes popping his head up and he was having a good time. That Colactus was managing like it was a playoff game…he let Herrera warm up on the mound in the ninth and when a pinch hitter was announced, he took him out without throwing a pitch in the inning. Gotta love that guy.
Staffer told me that they are going to put a wall in front of the Great Wall and add seats behind it.
