Looking over the stats, the Mets had one of the better offensive clubs in the National League, but also put together just about the worst pitching staff. With everyone speculating every which way to acquire pitching while re-signing Jose Reyes, I say: If the Mets really need pitching THAT badly -which they do-, why not let Reyes walk and sign C.J. Wilson instead?

Yes I agree, however there is one small problem. There are 29 other teams that need pitching also and that is going to drive the price up.
I bet the Skanks right now are wishing they signed another pitcher!
So, next year, when the offense is non-existent because Reyes and Beltran are not around and the Mets are losing 3-2, 2-1, 2-0 and 1-0 every day, people will be clamoring for more offense.
When you have a talent like Reyes, you build around him …. and it’s not a given that the offense will be consistent year-to-year.
A NY team should be able to make Reyes a competitive offer while still pursuing Wilson …. only poor ownership and past incompetence in the front office have Mets fans watching a small market team try to wiggle it’s way from failure to mediocrity.
Whether anyone is willing to admit it or not, the Mets are more than one player away from contending. It’s time to accept it and go into a full re-building project.
As likely as not, CJ Wilson will turn out to be the new version of John Lackey, and Jose Reyes will be the new version of Carl Crawford. Free agency is worth the gamble to add that final piece that could take your team to the next level, but otherwise it’s a sucker bet.
Based on the free agent list I saw, the only 2 remotely interesting starters were CJ Wilson and Edwin Jackson. As Rich said, teams will be really bidding up their prices due to the scarcity. CJ could be a Yankee…Jackson, who knows.
I agree with Paul…don’t waste long term money on free agents, when this team cannot contend for a few years at best. Re-build the farm system first.
The Mets are hypocrites. They build an old style ballpark with big gaps and high walls. Then they sign ‘power hitters’ who could barely clear the 356′ wall at their old park with an 8 foot wall. This park is BUILT for quality pitching, triples, and rabbits in the outfield.
Instead, we dump our pitchers for lunch money (i.e. Heath Bell), pay Jason Bay and Ollie Perez for what; I still do not know, yet keep the very talented David wright who would be a superstar elsewhere. Why not trade him (out of division or AL) for young pitching and what we thought Angel Pagan would be in the outfield.
We are headed back to 1978 Mets, no hope, shootin for .500, watching our good players leave while we grab has beens to keep the faithful coming.
Is George Foster available?
