Will Bob Geren wear #17 for the Mets?

I was looking at a Mets Blog post and it caught my eye that geren wore #17 with the A’s.

He also wore #17 with the Padres.

17 is currently unissued following the departure of Fernando Tatis.

Kevin Kierst (who replaced Charlie Samuels) did not issue the number in 2011.

I’m not going to say I have never discussed the retiring of numbers while I was standing in zip code 11368…and there’s a whole interesting path you go down when you do.  That’s a story for another day.

As for 17…my money is on no.  Charlie is gone, and I think Retire 17 is indeed a possibility…but again, we’ll discuss that another day.

  1. At the closing of Shea, they announced the last players this way:

Carter, Koosman, Yogi, Keith, Darryl, Doc, Willie Mays, Piazza, Seaver.

There is usually a pecking order to these. Piazza’s number will be retired, unless there is some bombshell. Don’t think they will retire

  2. (continued from above)

Mays, Yogi or Koosman at this point…they could have done so long ago. Perhaps they called Doc after the other guys as he was returning for the first time, but that order is probably how ownership views those players on the totem pole. If Doc and Darryl stayed clean, their numbers would be on the wall already.

  3. I kinda hope they give #17 to a middle reliever next year – it’s fun to listen to Gary Cohen needle Keith Hernandez about who has worn it. 🙂

    1. Remember how Met pitchers all went to numbers in the teens? Gooden was 16…Ojeda was 19…Darling switched from 44 to 12 then 15…Aguilera went from 38 to 15…Cone went from 44 to 17. I vaguely remember El Sid thinking about changing to 10, but don’t think he ever did.

        1. I do vaguely recall Sid wearing #10 in one of his baseball card photos, but it could have been from a spring training game (if it’s not just a product of faulty memory.)
