I think Adam Rubin is awesome. He does great great tireless work and knows far more about the Mets than I do or ever will. I have also never met or spoken to David Wright.
Adam writes…
Wright is under the Mets’ control for two more years. He is signed for $15 million for next season, with a team option for 2013 at $16 million (or a $1 million buyout).
Who is to say Wright would not just bolt after that contract expires anyway? Who is to say that after bearing the weight of being the face of a going-nowhere franchise for years, he doesn’t just say, “Enough” and sign with a team closer to his native Virginia … say as third baseman for the Baltimore Orioles? Or, dare we say, as Chipper Jones’ successor in Atlanta?
Wright, by the way, is not getting any younger. He turns 29 on Dec. 20.

I am 100% confident (and again what the hell do I know) that David Wright will be on the Mets for quite some time.
Let’s say David wants to be on the Orioles and they overpay him. What’s the long term marketing value of being Mister Met (no not that Mister Met) as opposed to at best the third best ever Orioles third baseman. Mr. Nationals? Mr. Braves?
Nope. Be a New Yorker. Clean cut everyone likes you advertiser friendly New Yorker.
Then there’s the Mets side of this.
Why would they not exercise that option. Gimme some reasons. I have none. So David is here through 2013.
Then there’s the off-field. Hang out at Citi some afternoon at 4. Who do you think is talking to the advertisers? The fans? The folks who might renew tickets?
Who are you going to put on the yearbook cover?
How are you going to sell New York that you let Reyes and Wright both go.
He’s not going anywhere.
